Short Hornady brass, again

Got some Hornady 45-70 brass this weekend from a shooter who doesn't reload. The cases all were shorter than normal. This is Leverlution ammo again.

Well from my experience this is not uncommon or a brass issue. If you take new brass and trim the length to the same you will find that in many instances it will shrink upon firing it. The case will expand to fill the chamber; it is easier to flow the brass from the neck shoulder area to fill the chamber at the shoulder. It will also flow from the base area filling the back of the chamber and stretching to fill the length. A wide shoulder or slightly straighter taper will flow brass from the length. Upon firing the case the second time in the same rifle it will resume the more normal pattern of stretching in length.
