On blackpowder loads,what is a paper patched bullet,reason for it and why do they use very long drop tubes for the powder drop???

Paper patched bullets are special cast bullets that are wrapped in paper on the bore contact surfaces. The paper is moistened and wrapped onto the bullet where it shrinks into a tight fit.
Long drop tubes are used to enable more powder to be compacted into a cartridge case.

A lot of paper patched bullets are swaged. The paper patch is actually a paper "jacket". They are generally pure lead or a soft alloy and with the paper patch there is no leading. They ar made under bore sized and then patched up to size. They can be extremely accurate with either black or smokless and a very good case can be made that they are the best hunting bullet ever developed. As stated the drop tube settles the powder deeper in the case. When using black powder and wanting the best accuracy you use a drop tube first. All cases must be filled to EXACTLY the same height. You then use a compression die to pack the charge tighter. This amount varies with each rifle load combonation.
