308 loading help with hodgdon powder

diver1diver1 Member Posts: 502 ✭✭
I loaded with H-380 by accident. Useing the bench I did not notice
any problem when shooting,new to the cal. Looking at the charts today
I should have used h-4895 with the nosler 150 spiz.(green tip) 43gr to 45gr. My question is at 50gr.(h-380)is that to hot a load to shoot
the last 6 bulletts and reload with the proper powder? Was I lucky?
Please advise your thoughts on this. Thanks Vince

    my data shows h-380 for a 150grain jsp as follows

    48.0 {2607 fps, 38,700cp}
    52.0{compressed charge}{2787 fps, 45,200cp}

    looks like you where safe this time, always double check, and "if in doubt throw it out", there is no sweat in pulling a few rounds to start over, when i load my powder hopper, i always mark what powder, and what i have it's charge set to, it only takes a few seconds, and the safety is worth it

    you lucked out with a powder close enough in burn rate to 4895. If you had mistakenly loaded something like H110 or similar,..likely you would be injured at the very least. I know I can be *, but I recheck my powder can by visually looking away and back at it 3 times over. Then I do the same with my load book to be sure I have not had a brain fart and somehow pulled out the wrong powder or data. The few seconds extra is worth it. And that is still not a be-all and end-all garantee of lifelong safety. Be extremely careful about using correct powders and throw anything you can't absolutely be sure of, ON THE GARDEN OR THE LAWN. Powder is cheap enough, surgery is NOT,.. especially cosmetic surgery.[;)]

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
    Got Balistics?
