is IMR-3031 a fast medum or slow burning powerder i want to know because i just bought a AR in 308 and i wnat to know if i can use 3031 in it

Sure can. I load 308 with 3031 all the time. I found a little better accuracy and velocity with reloader 15.

IMR 3031
A propellant with many uses, IMR 3031 has long been a favorite of 308 match shooters using 168 grain match bullets. It is equally effective in small capacity varmint cartridges from 223 Remington to 22-250 Remington and a great 30-30 Winchester powder.


I use IMR-3031 in several .308 Win. rifles with Match bullets ranging from 150 grs. through 190 grs. There are several powders that will equal 3031 but only one or two that can better it.

Here is a link to a burn rate chart. I like this powder for contender barrels, because the burn rate is quick enough for the shorter barrel. In a long barrel I prefer a slower powder. http://www.hodgdon.com/data/general/burnratechart.php

Yeah, 3031 seems to be a very versatile powder. I just loaded some in a couple boxes of .510 Wells (.460 Weatherby in .50 caliber). These were down-loaded with 87 grains for a friend who says the 90 grain loads we use for hunting are stiffer than necessary for target work. Bullets are 604 grains.

3031 is fast as rifle powders go, so be cautious in working up loads as pressures can jump with very small increases in powder. Personally in 308 I either go with faster powder for reduced/cast bullet loads, and slower than 3031 for jacketed full power loads.
