Reloading for Springfield XD

JWolfJWolf Member Posts: 1,901
Hi all, I am going to start reloading for my Springfield XD 40 when i return home from Iraq early next year, what I need to know is if anyone has reloaded for the XD and what kind of pressure it can handle such as +P and +P+ loads. I dont want to overpower the gun but I do want a little more speed and punch. Any advice?

Loading up to +P and +P+ loads can be a lil hazardous because you are pushing the limits of the cartridge. Also you would have to buy +P and +P+ rated cases which can be expensive. Not to mention that you would beat the crap out of your gun shooting that stuff all day long in it.

If you want to fire full power factory rounds you do not have to load to +P ratings. Just load right around max load and you will get the same effect while training with your side arm.

Do you really need hot loads to punch paper? Most important is to fire the same bullet weight in my opinion. For example I carry load my 1911 with 230gn Golden Saber for defensive use. For training I load up 230gn FMJ. Same recoil and point of aim, point of impact almost.

.40 can handle major power factor with no problem {165pf}, a 135 grain bullet at 1300 fps=175 pf, a 180grain bullet at 1000fps =180 pf

i would be more concerned about the gun than the case, springfield warns against using rounds at elevated velovities, i myself would warn against +p or +p+

Hi and thank you for replying, I figured that the weapon would be the restrictor in the power of the loads, I dont "need" all that power to just "Punch Paper" but i want it! LOL I want to experiment but I know better than to exceed tolerances set by manufacturer. Thanks again.
