shell holder gap

Since I sold my Dillon 1000, I am back to single stage loading for pistol calibers.

While loading .44 mags tonight I noticed that they slopped around a lot in the shell holder. The rim gap on the shell holder measures .1015.

Is this excessive?

    The critical dimension is the distance from the top surface of the shellholder to the bottom of the slot. SAAMI standard is .125" for most cartridges. If the lip is too thin it will not affect the headspace, but might fail and allow the case to pull out on the downstroke if the case is not adequately lubricated.
    The play is usually not harmful, and is sometimes rather pronounced, as when some thin rimmed cases (such as .310 Cadet in a .32-20 shellholder) are used in generalized shellholders meant for a wide range of cartridges.
