308 HODGDON YOUTH LOADS HELP

diver1diver1 Member Posts: 502 ✭✭
Hodgdon list a load for the 125 GR. Nosler BT in the youth tables.
I have an Adult friend who wants to use this bullet but can't find any load info other than the youth (H4895 @ 38gr.=2592f/s).My Question is that I like H4895 can we increase the load without causing stability problems with the bullet. Thanks for any help. Vince

    Vince,

"My Question is that I like H4895 can we increase the load without causing stability problems with the bullet. Thanks for any help."

Good question, considering that Hodgdon doesn't list a full power load for that particular bullet on their website. But they do list it in their reloading manual which I suggest as a good purchase for most reloaders. It has a lot of great information besides what you're asking about here.

Tell your friend that he can start at ~43.0 gr. of H-4895 and work up to a maximum load of ~47.0 gr. watching for signs of pressure. This is still one of the better powders for .308 Win. except that I have a hard time finding a bad powder if it's in the correct burning range.

    Be careful but enjoy!

push it too fast and he'll be sorry. It will blow up on close range shots when pushed too hard. Keep it slower than 2800fps +/-. It has very low sectional density.

why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Here is a simple low recoil 308 load that works great for everyone who tries it.
Size and prime your case as usual, then hold the cases over or set them on a clean pie pan or something similar. Next pour the cases full of H-380 powder.Dont settle it down or pack it you just wont it full to the rim with just pouring no settling or jiggling. wipe the case edge off level with a straight edge and seat a Speer 130 gr HP # 2005 the powder will settle as you seat it with out any compressing at all.
When I tell people this load with no measuring or weighing they dont believe me . Believe me it works.
You cant overload it because the max load of H380 with this bullet is a heavily compressed charge, several grains more. So you are safe.
My rebarrelled Mauser puts 3 of these in one ragged hole at 100 yds. my buddies Remington does 3 in a half inch at 200 yds. It is deadly on a deer also. Velocity is around 2900 fps and recoil is very easy. Try it
