could you tell me about this load please?

How do your cases handle the pressure?

This is a 44 mag load not 45 colt.

The aren't over pressure as far as I can tell.

44 mag cases are a little thicker in the web than the 45 colt cases that I have sectioned.

The book listed 13.5 grains of 2400 powder would produce 1150 FPS with a 310 grain rn bullet. My actual testing with this bullet did 1120 out of my 5.5" revolvers on average. My bullet of the same weight is a wide flat nose design, which allows the bullet to be shorter, allowing for more case capacity at the same length (1.60"). I upped the charge .1 grains at a time until I had reached 14.0 grains, and one gun did 1190, the other does 1215. No signs of pressure, with soft Federal primers they look good, not rounded at all, and the cases fell right out of the cylinder without any help. Out of a 20" rifle it does 1475 fps.

I have also loaded this load to 1.72" and used more powder, reached 1350 fps, but this is uncomfortable for me to shoot, and too long to function in my rifle(marlins require 1.62" or less), so I abandoned the load.

ahhh, I see. I was wondering about that. A .44mag case can handle almost 3X the pressure of a .45Colt. I'll never be able to go that high. My loading dreams for the .45Colt where nothing more than dreams, but I am learning.[^]

In the TC you can load appreciably higher pressure than you can for an old colt though. I have TC loads for a 300 grain jacketed at 1200. 280 grain lead at 1100+.

Does IL have one of those silly laws that you must use a handgun with a straight walled case over a certain length?

    I don't think so.

Extra barrels for a TC are relatively cheap. Get one in 45-70 so you can have a real handcannon.

Rich, I'm shooting a 10" w/ iron sights. When I pistol hunt, I like to craw into the scrub, where I can't bow hunt. My shots are usually face to face. A 45/70 would probably be overkill.

10" at 100 yards, or 10" at 25? makes a big difference. 10" at 100 I could live with if all my shots were at point blank. 10" at 25 I would buy a barrel in a new caliber.

ohhh, I meant a 10 inch barrel. However, my 25 yard groups are all over the place...deadly, but all over the place.
