can someone explain how wads have changed?

bobskibobski Member Posts: 17,866 ✭✭✭
im back into loading again, and i broke out my 10 year old win aa hulls, found my old claybusters, my old 209 win primers and went to town.
great! im back.
sooo...i run down the old gun shop to get some wads for my old win aa hulls and they dont have any.
i ask, whats that on the wall?
they say its for the new compression formed hulls.
what? i ask? new hulls? you mean the mainstay of skeet shooting is a clean sweep out with the old, in with the new?
i shoot ALL GAUGES and it appears the thousands of old aa hulls are now obsolete? can the old wads still be bought? i mean, i got enough hulls to last a lifetime! the newest hull i have is 1997.
can someone catch me up on life?
thanks!

    Bobski,

The old AA hull is history. It has been replaced by a two piece hull, three if you count the brass. According to Winchester's reloading pamplet you can still use the old data and wads. The crimp might have to be adjusted differently. I have loaded the new hulls and have found that they will colapse near the brass if cripmed too hard.

What type of wad are you trying to use?

    i use standard waa12's for trap 1 1/8oz.
i use claybuster 12SO fed replacements for skeet 1oz.
    claybuster waa20's for skeet.
    claybuster waa28's for skeet.
    win aa410's for 410.
    can i still buy these?
store owner says the new wads arent the same as the old ones.

btw, is remington still the old remington?

    Bobski,

The aa12's are the same. There is a cheaper wad from Winchester called the WT12. It's orange and they come 500 to a bag. They are the same. I do know that if you reload the 28 & 410 that the hull has changed and you have to use the newer wad designed just for that hull. I reload the 28 ga and I have not used any of the new hulls, I have quite a few of the older ones. As far as the 12 ga hulls all of the wads are interchangeble. Graf's reloading has both type of wads listed. The new 28 & 410 are called HS for the new HS hulls.

I don't know about the Federal wads, I have never used anything but the WW or remington wads.

    bobski.
get yourself the 1118 claybuster wads or the 4118 and go to town reloding. the only differanc is that they started beveling the powder end of the wad to help go over the step inside the new shells. i have both old and new and load the same to both. called winchester when the new ones came out. and they said i needed to seat the wad more to not crimp the sides. after i got the wads seated good enough i havent crimped one in a long time. also since you have been out of reloading for a whhile. i will assume you have an older loader that has spring pressure for seating the wads. i had to remove my spring and built a piece to make the floor plate solid to get the wqads deeper.

ok, so im to understand that:
    * there IS a new wad for the NEW hull and its called the HS hull.
    * that HS wads go with the new HS hull.
    * that the new wads can be loaded in to the old hulls only if i seat them REAL HARD.

    now,

do they still make the OLD WADS for OLD hulls?
    is remington unchanged?

bobski the new wads will go into the old huls just fine without any modification the the wad seating. the old wads had straight walls and you would crimp the new hulls if you used the same pressure as the old hulls. if you seated the old wads farther down on the new hulls. they worked ok. the new waa12 wads are rolled on the powder end. they slide into the new hulls without crimping using old setings ( you dont have to seat them so hard.) using the new wads on the old hulls there is no problem. so use the new waa12 wads for both hulls and you are fine same load data. slaybuster is suposed to be rolling their wads also like winchester. i havent seen them yet as i stillhave plenty of the old left. i had to modify my seating pressure to keep from crimping the new shells. i have a older realoader that had a spring under where you seated the wad and ran out of stroke on the seater rod. so i had to remove the spring and make a solid base so the wads could be seated farther down. since doing so i havent crushed any more new hulls and the old ones load just fine with these settings. i hope this is more clear for you. you can e mail me if you need more advise.

    i get it now.
    (wads in hull:)
old in old, new in old is ok.
new in new is ok, adjust spring seating crimp.
old in new NOT ok, crimps new hull.

do they still make the old wads? im getting the impression that the old ones are on the way out.

does remington still do compression formed hulls the old remington way?

i think since the new wads work just fine in both old and new they have quit making the old.(winchester)
with respect i think im getting more reloads out of the new hulls compared to the older ones. but im loosing more once fires to holes at the crimp edge. seems that if they make it past the first load they work good.

the remington sts still look like the old. i just shot 2 boxes about 3 months ago and have the hulls still.
