If you have another scope try swapping them out if the same thing happens your looking at a fore end issue. I take it were talking Handy Rifle? If your groups get back in line send the scope back and ask for a repair.
Question new scope or used?[8D]

we are talking handy rifle
and scope is/was new
Not to scare you or anything, but you might want to take it to a gunsmith as well. I had similar issues with a Handi-rifle in 223Rem. I bought the rifle to handload for, but done some shooting with factory ammo and experienced the same issue. When I started to load for it I used my Stoney Point OAL Gauge to find my max OAL and was quite shocked. With a 55gr FMJ bullet touching the rifling it was almost exactly a quarter inch out of the case. The throat of the rifle was extremely over cut. I had to load Berger's 80gr VLDs to even get close to the rifling, I'm talking OAL of the load was over 2.60" to hit the lands! I had no use for the rifle them because of the ridiculous jump I had with light bullets and the twist wasn't fast enough for the heavy and long Bergers.
Like I said, not trying to scare you, just check it out. H&R will replace the barrel, if that is the problem. Most likely, from what you are discribing, it is the scope.
Good Luck!
