    .40-60 WCF uses a completely different case than 40-65 WCF.

    Quote from Feb. 2008 Handloader Mag. "Niether .40-65 WCF nor .40-60 Marlin should be confused with the earlier .40-60 WCF cartridge, which was a chambering of the Model 1876 Winchester and which is seeing a slight comeback due to the Model 1876 replicas now being imported from Italy. The .40-60 WCF is a completely different round."

    My 4th edition of "Cartridges of the World" lists one load for .40-60 Winchester. 21 gr. of 4198 behind a 210 gr cast Lyman #403168 bullet with a muzzle velocity of 1520 fps. Of course you could use a case full of Black Powder.

    Brass should be available and that is good because I don't think it can be easily formed from some other case.

SAID CASES CAN EASYLY BE MADE FROM .45/70=SAME BASE/RIM DIMENTIONS AS .40/65, JUST THE OVERALL LENGHT IS DIFFERENT (BTW .40/60 MARLIN AND .40/65 WIN ARE THE SAME CASE, JUST DIFFERENT LOADINGS). I HAVE CONVERTED SEVERAL OF THE .40/65'S TO .40/60'S AND THEY WORK WELL.

    You are confusing me, you said you converted 40-65 WCF to 40-60 WCF. Do you mean you converted the rifles? Why would you do that, going from the better, bigger, higher pressure cartridge that uses more common brass to the older smaller one? The "Handloader" mag. article said that the 40-65 WCF brass could be easily formed from 45-70 but that the 40-60 WCF (not Marlin) could not and that it had almost no taper meaning it has a smaller head diameter. Since you have an example of a gun chambered for 40-60 WCF you could easily check that.

    sorry for the confusion;
    a. rifle is a m-1876 clone chambered in .40/60wcf
    b. I converedted .40/65 brass (starline) by shortening it approx. .250" (bertram .40/60 brass is $3 ea., .40/65 starline is $.50 ea.)
    c. cart. of the world "brass can easyly be formed from .45/70", and my measurements (and c.o.t.w. index) indicate the same cart. base dia. as the .45/70 (or .40/65) the rim is slightly smaller but just a few .001's.

    Thanks for the clarifications. I guess I need to buy the new edition of C.O.T.W. Have you tried the modified brass in the 40-60 WCF Mod. 1876, do they chamber fine and extract OK? Let me know as I am inclined to contact the author of the Handloader article.

    I think some of the confusion here is from the fact that win. chambered the 1876 in 2 'classes' of cartridge. The 40/60 and .45/60 (both based on a shortened .45/70 case) and the .45/75 and .50/95 (both based on a shortened .50/110 case). here it a picture of several fired and loaded .40/60's and a couple of .40/65 cases before trimming.wcf.jpg

    Thanks for the great picture. What did you end up using for load data and did you fire them in your new mod. 1876.

    I think the real confusion is because I read and believed an article written by someone who had a couple facts wrong along with some info from a very old edition of Cartridges of the World.
