Accurate down range

keystone1974keystone1974 Member Posts: 242 ✭✭✭
I have a Ruger 300 win. mag. thats good at 250 yds., but want to buy a 300 mag. thats accurate at 500 yds. The two guns I'm thinking of buying (only one) are Remington 700 Sendero SF II, OR the Remington 700 XCR both are bull barreles which I like. Does anybody know the more accurate one?

The one you have is probably fine, just needs a load it likes. Accuracy is a subjective issue. Define what is acceptable to you and work to achieve it. Loads, bedding issues, trigger, scope all figure into the equation. A one holer at 500 yds is a little much to ask. How about a 1 foot group. Too big? Well somewhere in the middle is what you want. A new rifle may not be the answer. If a new rifle is in order neither one of those will do it out of the box. $3500 to $4000 bucks will get you there. My 2c

Hello Keystone .P51 has is correct. I would also state that unless you carry a bench rest and sand bags with you the most inaccurate part of your shooting of your rifle at ranges over 250 yards is The shooter. First you need to know the exact yardage to know what the drop is going to be if you are off by 50 yards at 500 yards you can be over or under even a deer size animal. you also need to know what the wind is at the point the gun is fired & from and all point in between to the target. This can cause wind drift at 500 yards to be left or right of the target of 1 foot or more. Most people dont shoot at ranges over 250 yards unless shooting in matches and then the large % of guns as they come out of the box are not the best choice . Big Buck will get a better gun but the shooter is still the key.

    "Accurate at 500 yards"..
Just what exactly does this mean ?

Perhaps you need a better scope on the existing rifle.
Perhaps it would respond to a bedding job.
Do you handload ? You may well get whatever you consider the magical 'accurate' by varying the bullets or powder.

Perhaps you need a bit more recoil pad..recoil can spoil accuracy.

3500 dollar rifles are really nice.

On the other hand..I worked over a 300 dollar Stevens 7mm08 (added a bedding block) and with 175 grain Sierra's the rifle will shoot 5 inch groups at 500 yards....

Buying nearly ANY production rifle new does not ensure that you are going to get what you want in accuracy.

The remington rifles will most always do a fine job with a good handload. I would replace the trigger, have it bedded, install a top end scope, and start shooting. I prefer the Sendero myself.

    Both 300win sendero's I loaded for readily digest 74gr RL22 with 180gr match pills and 215M primers.

Thanks B17-P51, PERRY SHOOTER, HIGHBALL, AND JUST C for all of your wisdom. I've had the ruger for 10 years it has a 6.5x20x44 Alaskan Guide on it. The ruger likes rem. core lock's compeared to hornady 150 interbond. Off the bench at 200 yds. were getting inch and a half groups with the occasional flinger, I let the gun cool between shots since in the field it's cold, but dont know if that's the best way or not since I DID'NT grow up shooting real guns just pellet guns till age 15, I'm 33 now. I'm left handed and the Ruger is right handed so last year I bought a Browning Bar Saffari II and a Bushnell 4x16x50 4200 Elite scope,I love the scope in the rain but am not impressed with the gun. I just spent 270 dollars on 7 different kinds of bullets other than the rem's and the next calm day I'm taking out both guns to see what they like then my friend's DAD said I could start reloading in his shop and he has 300 stuff but no 300 gun. If the new bullets and hand loadind don't help what kind of gun and scope would you guys reccomend for 3000 or under. I was thinking of the two guns I mentioned and I like the Bushnell 4.5x30x50 6500 elite, Leupold Mark 4 LR/T 6.5X20X50, Swarovski A-line 6x18x50, Zeizz Concuest 6.5x20x50, and last since it sits lower on the gun Leupold 6.5x20x56. Does the height of a scope affect it's accuracy at different ranges? Most ranges I hunt are 75 yds. to 200 but last Nov. I saw a monster at 500yds ground was level but I was'nt coffident at that range. All I know about guns and scopes are in this long blog and it wont hurt my feelings if I'm way off on my gun and scope thoughts. Just C what do you mean about trigger work? Thanks everybody for helping out a novice shooter.

The rem trigger can be tuned to be much lighter,..however each one is different and some won't go down to a light crisp pull without being unsafe. It is easier to simply replace the trigger with a Rifle basix or timney,..or even better,..a Jewell. Trigger pull being heavy and creepy can greatly affect long range accuracy.

You need to spend time with your selected accuracy load,..shooting on paper at each distance to determine the Point of Impact and KNOW where the bullet will be for shooting at Game. Use a balistic table generator such as "jbm ballistics" and change the BC number until your real world impacts are reflected by the table it generates. Then you will have your accurate "drop chart". That along with a rangefinder will increase your long range effectiveness.

JustC, Thank you for all of your input- when I buy a new gun I'll talk to a local gun smith about the jewel trigger. Also I was reading your commints reguarding the varmit scope and wondered the pro's and cons other than the price between the nightforce brand scope and the Leuopld Mark 4 LR/T. I'm not familiar with nightforce and have never shot a gun with a leupold scope on it, let alone a $1300 Leupold scope, but I LIKE that nightforce is so coffident in their product. I love 300 win mags and when I GET a new one I want it to be the last scope and 300 I ever think of owning. I'm useing my tax returns to buy it even if the other two guns shoot better with the new shells, mostly cause I also want a synthetic stock and a bull barrel if my plan goes right I'll be in Alaska in 5 years and would'nt want my wood stocks messing up my long shots and buying a different stock might be an option if I KNEW what I was doing.

I prefer the Nightforce NXS to the Leupy MK IV,..the only caveat being it is a little heavier. I prefer their reticles also. Swapped out my MK IV's and never looked back.

    Keystone1974,

My personal preference for that would be a Savage 112BVSS. That is if you want a .300 Win Mag. They also make a great .308 in the F/TR and a 6.5x.284 in their F-class. I will say the Rem 700 is an accurate rifle out of the box but my best experience says the Savages are better.

Sandwarrior, I could not find the 300 win. mag in the 12 BVSS, I found a 300 WSM. in the Savage 12 FVSS. Where can I find the 112 BVSS in the 300 win. mag.?
