.510 Whisper

StealthStealth Member Posts: 27 ✭✭
Do any of you have first hand experience with the .510 Whisper?
What I am looking for is, loads, barrel length, twist, action type, ware to get a reamer and dies.Cost of reamer/dies.
I need to know if a Remington 700 RUM action and bolt will work.
If you have dealt with this caliber before I would appreciate your info.

    Stealth,

You probably need to do some searching on the web for this information, there's plenty available. The biggest drawback to these cartridges is that they are proprietary to SSK Industries and protected by Registered Trademark. (Whispersr)
    http://www.sskindustries.com/cartridges.htm

Being proprietary cartridges, dies and brass are usually only available through SSK Industries. Hornady makes the dies for the Whisperr series but they were only available through SSK, check to be sure. CH4D makes custom dies for just about every cartridge imaginable but their current list does not include the Whisperr series. J.D. Jones, owner of SSK, aggressively pursues folks that try to go around the legal protections of 'his' cartridges.

If in your research you can't find reamer makers, die makers, brass case suppliers, that's why. But it isn't difficult to change one dimension of the Whisperr cartridges and make your own wildcat. It will cost more simply because you have to order custom everything.

    Enjoy the search!

"Silencing a rifle has traditionally been an extremely difficult procedure due to the inherent high-speed nature of the rifle cartridge. Although a suppressor could eliminate the sound of the weapon, the crack of the bullet flying supersonic would always reveal the presence of a shooter. The Whisperr series was developed by SSK Industries to solve this problem, and uses an extremely large, heavy bullet to maintain a sub-sonic velocity. When used with a good sound suppressor, weapons chambered in Whisperr calibers can be truly silent."

"The .510 Whisperr is the newest and largest cartridge in the series. It uses a particularly heavy bullet, which is well suited to long-range shooting due to its steady trajectory. However, the slow bullet makes long-range shots against moving targets impractical, and the cartridge is quite rare and very expensive. No weapons are produced in this or any other Whisperr caliber, but many can be converted by SSK, the Sako TRG-S being just one model."

The .500 Whisperr is based on the belted .460 Weatherby Magnum case, trimmed to 2" and necked to accept .510" bullets.

The .510 Whisperr is based on the rimless .338 Lapua Magnum case, trimmed to 1.875" and necked to accept .510" bullets.

Capable of MOA accuracy at 600 meters, the .500 Whispersr can be used for light anti-vehicle/materiel work with the proper payload.
