32-40

waxmanwaxman Member Posts: 18 ✭✭
I have a marlin lever in 32-40 made in 1907. I was wondering if anyone has a load for it with a 170 gr lead bullet. All my manuels list loads for 170 jacketed bullets and 196 gr and up lead bullets.
Is HOCH a type of bullet mold?

I've always loaded my 32-40 with IMR 4759...13 to 18 grains. The 32-40 was never what one might call a real powerhouse, so light charges of any fast to medium powders seem to work well.

Hello Waxman I think one reason you dont see light weight lead bullet loads listed for the 32-40 is Full Pressure loads for this light weight would push these bullets faster then most people like to shoot lead bullets . If your bore is GREAT and you use linotype bullet .001 over bore diameter plus some of the new SYN lube you should not have problems. The HOCK bullet if memory serves me had a design that you placed a ZINK washer in the mold each time this was located near the base and was touted to scrape any leading out of the bore[?] I dont know where you can find this long discontinued mold and even if you did to find a supply of the Zink washer would be very HARD [:(!][:(]. The 32-40 was used in single shots for some time as a TARGET round . NICE RIFLE[^]

Edit HAWK is correct I confused HOCK with Harvey Damn it's bad to get old [:I] But I guess it's better then NOT getting old.[:o)]

Hoch is a brand of bullet mould, very high quality, very high priced. I have never seen a Hoch cut for the zinc washer of the old Harvey Protex Bore bullets. Hoch is best known for nose pour moulds to give flat smooth bases but I think they do make some conventional types.

Lyman, RCBS, or SAECO moulds are of decent quality and are much less expensive than Hoch.

I do not load .32-40 and cannot recommend a load, but my old Lyman manual has an "accuracy load" of 12 grains IMR4227 for 1158 fps with 184 gr bullets from their mould #321297. It shows 7.5 gr Unique and their 164 gr #321317 mould for 1335 fps as "factory duplicate."
