Corrosive primed brass

flyingtorpedoflyingtorpedo Member Posts: 1,301 ✭✭✭✭✭
I've got some old US military 30-06 ammo. I know by the headstamp it is corrosive. It doesn't have any collector value to it and is worth more as components. I'm not going to fire it either becasue I don't want to get the corrosive residue in my garand, I don't have a 30-06 bolt. I don't want to pull the bullet, fire the primer, clean it out then use it because I don't want to run the risk the chance of getting any residue in the garand or have it weaken the brass either. So my question is should there be any corrosive residue if I pop the unfired primer out and clean the case well? Thanks! [:)]

Hello F.T. if you pull the bullet dump the powder and then DE-PRIME the live Corrosive primer them you have NO worry about residue However be aware crimped in primers are hard to get out and some times they go off during removal . don't let you catch you by surprise. You will also need to remove the crimp. Either with reamer or swager.I would think you could almost buy new brass cheaper.

Thanks perry. I know they are crimped and will be harder to get out and they may go off in the process. I tried selling the ammo on the auction side and it was up for a long time cheap with no bites-not enough of it to make the shipping charges worth it. With the way the stock market is going the prospect of selling them is nill. I don't want the ammo either but don't want to toss the brass because its good. I was already planning on using the bullets. I may just have to try a few sometime when I'm home alone so I'm the only one that crap's their pants when one goes off![:D]

Deprime the stuff VERY SLOW, so there is less chance of it going "BANG" [;)]

Thanks! I have been reading other threads about removing live primers as well.
