223 in south Texas hunt

joesjoes Member Posts: 484 ✭✭✭
My 9 year old son and I just got back from a s. Texas hunt. He had a chance to harvest a ram. I( over the last serval months tried to get him to shoot a .243 but was unable because of the recoil, but was able to get him to shoot a 223 rather well). I loaded 223 with 27.1 grs. of varget with a 60 gr nosler partition. At 70 yards ( with a shot just above the heart) the ram expired and never took a step. Upon caping the ram the bullet took out both lungs and not only went through the ribs in the entry but also through the ribs as it exited. The ram weighted just over 100 lbs. I asked you guys about the "perfect bullet for a 223 big game hunt" and did get some feedback for the partitions so I thought I would post the results.
And I can say The experience of a father son first big game hunt is priceless and think we can add another hunter to the ranks.

That is pretty cool. It is always good to hear about future hunters. We need more to keep up with the anti-gun nuts.

    joe,

Thanks for the update! Glad to hear the hunt went well. In this case bullet selection and probably more importantly, shot placement played a really big role. No miracle bullet is going to put that ram down unless the bullet is put where IT will put that ram down. Good choice sticking with a rifle you knew your son could shoot well.

p.s. That is an exciting moment when you are there with your son...being there and doing that!

Thanks for the great feedback. The 60 Nosler is one of the best bullets for the 223 and larger animals.

woody, he shot a painted sheep ( which I think would score bronze). We are already looking for our next adventure! Dad is thinking another excuse to go again, (and mom can'tsay no to that) that's my story and I am sticking to it!
