30/06 load I discovered

woodchuckjohnwoodchuckjohn Member Posts: 207 ✭✭✭
While making us some experimental 30/06 loads using IMR 4895 and IMR 4064 using various mild loadings of 45 to 47 grains, I decided to try one hot load but still not a max load using 4064. At the range I achieved groups of 1 1/8 to 2 1/2 inches with the others, but the 4064 load of 50.3 grains gave me a group of 3/8 inch all holes touching at 100 yard. Unbelievable. Speed is 2900 FPS according to the loading manual. I should by a crony. Looks like I found a load I can live with.

Fire a few more groups with the same combo. If the group size holds, it sounds like you've got a good combo.
Sometimes the random fates come together and throw you a good group with a otherwise eratic load (BTDT got the tee shirt).

I'm assumeing your using a 150 gr bullet. 51.2grs of 4064 will get you 2942 with a 24 inch barrel through a chrono. Good load for jsp bullet.

I have a sporterized Springfield 03A3 which I glass bedded and installed a timney trigger. The bullet is Sierra #2125 150 grain game king. The rifle was purchased here on Gun Broker. It was fun devleoping loads for it. I also have good luck with the 180 grain Remington core-lokt bullet using 45 grains of IMR 4895 producing a 3/4 in group at 100 .

Mt father had a 03a3, 4 groove that loved 57 grs of IMR-4350 and 150 gr. Hornady PSP. It also liked 50 grs IMR-4064 150 gr. Sierra RNSP w/OAL of 3.017 (no comparator).

    I have a 03 with a 03a3 2 groove that likes 56.7 grs Varget 130 gr. Speer HP. 3/4" groups.

The barrel is six groove. Not a military barrel. Whoever sporterized the rifle replaced the barrel and a bit shabbily too. Has a scar near the chamber cause probably during assembly to the action.
