Brass ???

I took psoession of a bunch of .223 brass, Headstamped WW '84 as part of a gun transaction, my question is this:

Does anyone have any particular opinion/experience with the WW '84 brass in .223?? Or is it pretty much standard grade, run-of-the-mill stuff?

Thanx!

The 84 on the headstamp would normally stand for the year of manufacture. This is usually on ammo made for the military, such as Lake City, example: LC 84 would mean Lake City manufacture in the year 1984. The only difference for your cases that I could think of without grinding through some specific research would be a possible crimped primer and/thicker brass. Federal makes brass for the military and for its match ammo and it has the standard head stamp but the case walls are thicker than standard commercial cases. Check the case volumn (water) against another WW case with commercial headstamp against the ones you have that are stamped WW 84. If the volumn is significant, take that as an indicator you are dealing with different capacity/powder volumn between the two cases. Another way would be to weigh a standard Winchester case against the WW 84's. A big variance might mean thicker cases in the 84 which would mean less powder room and you would have to back your load off (10 percent is a normally recommended reduction) and work up from there.

I'm sure there is someone out there that can be more specific. I just hope this helps for the time being.

    Crypto,
    Thanx for the reply.
My question was meant to see if this particular batch of brass was known to be of a better (or lesser) quality/consistency than "average". I'm thinning the heard, so to speak and haven't even reloaded this brass so, I'm trying to decide whether to keep it for future use or let it go with some other lots.

    wanted man,

Roger that. Wouldn't know about the quality/consistency of that particular lot of brass. I was hoping we could have heard from some of the other members of the forum. I am always looking to learn something new so maybe we can both get the answer you are looking for.

The WW should stand for Winchester Western. The quality should be as good as Lake City, or better.

I think that Winchester produced military brass uses a WCC xx headstamp. Older production had the w c c separated a little but newer production has wcc in very small letters close together. Maybe to make room for the nato cross in circle at 12 o'clock. I have hand sorted over 10,000 empties this spring w/o seeing a WW xx type headstamp.

    wanted man,

W-W is Winchester civilian brass. Same with brass that says Winchester on it. WCC is Winchester military brass. I don't know what the difference is between 'W-W' and 'Winchester' brass, i.e. specs, LE(?) bulk vs. box grade overrun, but I think it is great brass. I would take Winchester over any common produced brass. Lapua and Norma are a step up. But of standard production that's what I like to shoot. In my .223 no less.

WW sounds like commercial not military winchester...WCC is the winchester headstamp for all winchester military brass.
