tumbled brass

joesjoes Member Posts: 484 ✭✭✭
I have tumbled brass using corn and rice and have found the brass comes up clean.......but not polished. The brass I tumble is outdoor range brass. I thought that I may have dirt in it causing the dullness, so I change the material to find the same thing happening. I then thought the bowl may be the cause ( from being stratched on the inside). I sanded the inside of the bowl with 220 sandpaper to remove any inperfections. I tumbled again using a polishing agent and still dull, clean brass. What the heck am I doing wrong? help

After cleaning the brass what is the best way of keeping them shiny and from tarnishing?

    Try some treated walnut hulls.
Is your corn cob treated. If not go to Wal-Mart and get some polish called KIT SCRATCH OUT, it's a very fine polish, and put some in the corn cob and run your tumbler with the top off untill it gets mixed through.

I clean with walnut and polish with corn. I use Dillon "Rapid Polish" to treat the media. I tumble 2 hours in walnut and 1 hour in corn. The brass is usually brighter than new and when shooting with friends that reload I can always tell my brass apart.

Corn and rice are not aggressive enough to clean dirty brass, you need walnut media for that, or a good ultra sonic.......

try some POLISH in the media. I use waterbased stuff and a little dab will bring my cases up shiny to almost not even gold anymore.

    Hi,

If you want shinny brass then add some brass polish like the kind BHAVEN and JUST C is talking about.[:D] I get mine from Midway.

I have already used Brasso. Anyone else try it?? I dumped it right in the media. A very small amount, maybe a tablespoon. Wipes up nice but I've wondered about it's effect on powder if the ammo sits around a while. Call this a piggyback question ???[:I]

I've heard Brasso makes the brass brittle due to the ammonia in it. It does polish it up nice though.

You are correct, sir! Use a water-based polish or some jewelers rouge and you will be just fine.

Use caution with some of the pet bedding products. I tried some and the pieces of cob are small enough to enter cases but big enough to hang up inside the smaller caliber cases. I would only use the stuff I got in pistol cases or over .30 rifle cases and examine the inside of the case VERY carefully. Having a chunk of corn cob in the case could cost you a rifle and a trip to the E R.
