A gas check is a bullet metal cup attached to the base of a cast lead bullet that is specifically designed to accept the gas check. To fit the base shank of the bullet is of a reduced diameter. The gas check helps reduce leading by reducing gas blow by. It also protects the base of the bullet from deformation during the firing process. Some folks think the base can melt from the powder gases but tests have shown the base of the bullet never exceeds 300 degrees from firing.
