    1/2 grain under max IMR-4198 from a Lyman #47 reloading manual, in R-P brass, CCI small rifle primer, and Sierra 50 grain Blitz bullet has served me perfectly for about 35 years in my Remington 700 ADL. Under minute-of-angle accuracy, and instant lights out to a lot of woodchucks (groundhogs here in Pennsylvania) plus a few other varmints out to 225 yards or so is the history and expected results of this rifle and load. Your mileage may vary, and of course work up towards any near-maximum load, but the IMR-4198 seems to be a good selction powder for the .222 Remington. The Sierra 50 gr Blitz offers instant expansion in the velocity windows, and isn't likely to ricochet or penetrate through and keep going. Good luck!

    I have a savage model 340 which is very similar to what you have my two best loads out of my gun are the 52gr Hornady HPBT match bullet with 25 gr of BLC(2) and a 205M primer also shooting well out of mine is the 53gr HPBT Sierra with 21.8gr of H322 and a CCI 400 primer. Hope this helps you some.

    Thanks ,guys. now I've got a starting point.
    BTW, I got a box of reloads dated 1981 using 20.5 gr. 4198 with Speer 50 gr. Spitzer, so I guess 4198 was a pretty good powder to start with.

    Bill,

    I didn't see my load get interjected in there. THE MOST ACCURATE LOAD I EVER SHOT is 22.5 gr. of XMR(BR)2015 by AA behind a Sierra 50 gr. varminter. I put five shots into .013" with it. I had two other groups that were close of 3 shots into .018" and .019". Never had a more accurate round than the .222 Rem in my Win 70 HB.

    I have a couple for you that I use in my old M700;
    1) WW brass, RP 7 1/2, 21.0 of IMR 4198, WW 46 gr JHP MAX!
    2) WW brass, RP 7 1/2, 21.0 of RL7, Speer 50 gr. spitzer
    3) WW brass, RP 7 1/2, 24.0 of BLC2, Speer 50 gr. spitzer
    4) WW brass, CCI 400, 24.0 of BLC2, Speer 52 gr. HP not TNT
    These will all feed through the short magazine of the 700, seat the bullets after setting the seat die with a RP 50 grain factory cartridge. I have more if you need, PM me.

    Best 222 Rem load I ever found was 24.5 gr of BC-2 in a Rem case, CCI primer and a 50 gr Sierra spitzer
