Carbide dies for .30 luger

Mike 6Mike 6 Member Posts: 5 ✭✭
I was wondering if anyone knows of a source for carbide .30 luger dies. I want to start loading this cartridge, but don't want to mess with lubing cases.

thanks, mike

Isn't 30 Luger a bottle neck round [?] If it is you still need to lube them.

Carbide dies work great on straight walled cases and are not much more in cost then Regular They only have a small carbide ring at the beganing of the die. Dies however for Bottle necked cases "YOUR 30 Luger" are another story cost MUCH MORE and may or may not need lube,

Without checking any specs, IIRC that the 30L is a lot like the 357SIG, in that the body is straight (it's the tapered body common to most bottle neck cartridges that requires the lube)

You might consider trying a carbide 9mm Lugar die on the main body, and than running it through your 30 Lugar die. As the second die will (should) only be contacting the neck/shoulder, where you don't normaly put lube anyway, you should be alright.

If you still need to lube, try some ISDW or Hornady "Unique" case lube, just enough to put a "sheen" on the tips of 2 fingers and your thumb will transfer all the lube you need to your cases as you load them into the press. Nice thing is that neither one of them "needs" to be removed afterwards.

The .30 Luger is an obsolescent bottleneck cartridge, which means two things:
    1. Nobody is going to bother making carbide dies for it even though 2. they would be $100 or more.

Tailgunner's idea might work but you would have to keep the cases scrupulously clean. There are some cases you can size dry in steel dies, but I have invariably scratched the dies sooner or later.

CH-4D will titanium nitride coat an entire sizing die which MIGHT work dry on .30 Luger (It does on .44-40) but it is very expensive.
