help with a 25-06 load

im just wondering if any of you have tried to us retumbo powder with this round. I've seen that hogdon has a load for it with a 117 grain nosler bullet with 57 grains of powder being the max load, but i want to use it with a 100 grain barnes. the rifle that im using it in will be a thompson pro hunter with a 26 inch barrel so i think that the barrel is plenty long enuff to burn the slow burning powder.
The only reason that i would like to use this powder is that i dont want to have 50 different types kicking around,i use this stuff in 3 different rifles with good results.

so i would like everyones imput on this because so far ive done everything by the book, but i would like to do some experementing with this round.thanks to everyone

This may not be strictly according to Hoyle, but if 57 grains is listed as max. for the 117 grain pill, I'd start there with the 100 and feel confident that I wouldn't be crossing any dangerous lines.
The other thing would be to contact the powder manufacturer and get their recommendation.

    Hi guys![:D]
    ................................................ GRS VEL PRESSURE
    117GR.HDY SPBT Hodgdon Retumbo 56.0 2876 44,600 CUP START
    ................................................ 60.5C 3079 50,700 CUP MAX

THE ABOVE IS RIGHT OFF HODGDONS RELOADING DATA SITE.[8D]

As you can see the MAXIMUM load listed is a Compressed load at 60.5 grs. Can't get enough powder in the case for the 100 gr pill and you are risking very high pressures.[B)] I'd say use IMR-4350 or H4350 for the 100 gr. Barnes if you like slow burners.[^] Varget or IMR-4064 should work too.[:)]

My 25-06 prefers H4831 and the Nosler 100BT

First thing is try to contact The folks that make the powder. Barring that you will find that the lighter the bullet the more powder is needed to get the same Pressure. I would have no questions in using Max published loads of powder by grains in the same case 25/06 with a 17 % lighter bullet . Just my $.02

    joes,

Just my opinion but I'm thinking Retumbo is just too slow to be effective in a 25-06. 4831 and 4350 are more in my thinking for this round. You could use RE-19 and RE-22 as well. Good pressure from those powders. Right now the latter two are running around $16-$18 a lb. They still give good accuracy too. Depending on where you buy, the former two are running anywhere's from $18.00 to $27.00

    Mudd_bogger,

RE: Magpro, yes I have used it. It's good but I prefer Hodgdon. I also use Vihtavuori(VV) as well. VV is VERY consistent stuff. I use that and Hodgdon for my long range stuff as they are the two most consistent powders I've used. IMR is consistent in same temperatures. But in the past it's been way more temperature sensitive than the others. One thing a lot of shooters who load ball powders do, which Magpro makes a lot of, is load with magnum primers (especially in colder months) to help ignite the powder.

I think you should stay with the "tried and true" "proven performers" for the 25-06 -- 4350-4831-reloader 19

You might want to try the new Hybrid 100V from Hodgdon, I've been working with it the past few days in my XP-100-25/284 with the 95 grain Berger flat base and it's one small hole at 100 yards at just under 3400fps average for 5 shots..... with cases loaded 8 times and no problems with pressure in my 26 inch Lilja barrel........
Shoots way better than my old 100 gr BT & H-4831 ever did........
