45-70 question

varianvarian Member Posts: 2,258 ✭✭✭✭
been out of loading for about 20 years, going to restart soon with 45-70. my old load was 57gr of imr3031 with 300gr sie hp. i am now looking at imr4198. my sec. edition sierra manual shows 51.8gr as max. load, however hodgdon,s shows 54gr as a starting load. what's up? loads will be shot in modern 1895 marlin, cva optima, h&r 1871.

Sounds like one source is for IMR4198 and the other is for H4198. Absolutly different powders.

It's not that unusual to find that kind of differences from one manual to another. In fact, I rather like to see it because it indicates that the different companies have done their own testing instead of just copying another company's data.

Incidently, I have never had a great deal of luck in the 45-70 with either IMR3031 or IMR 4198.
