Just ordered a dies set and some 140 gr nosler ballistic tips to reload for my remington 700 varmint special. anyone got any loads they particularly like. these are for paper punching, not hunting.

I'm not an expert, but i did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Just got a BLR in 7mm-08 and I hate to buy factory bullets. Can anyone suggest a load for whitetails? Most of my shooting will be in the 50 yd range (I hunt in a swamp) and I want ot use the heaviest bullet I can for this round.
    Watt yoo got?[8D]

Here another..just bought a 7mm-08 cal new , a Howa 1500, apart from the rubber stock ,now cured with a boyds :) it a fine made rifle. but......here we go !!

after just over a 100 rounds thru her, (cooled & cleaned every 5 shots) various factory ammo, federal, Winchester, norma etc she does a 1" zero from the box , so ok for new , I expect it to get better with use ...maybe , so @ 100yard 1" , take it to 200yard & best she do is 4" Hmmmmmm (not good) on a 4" steel gong ! take it to 300 yds with any ammo 120gr 140gr , 150gr or any home loads with various loads of between 36gr - 42 gr of powder & she will not group at all under 8" . I have checked the scope, mounts, ammo, crown....where do I go now ?? any ideas guys are welcome :)Thanks

Does anyone use the 7mm-08 for competition shooting. I know a lot of people talk of the 6.5 right know over the 7.62N. But does the 7mm-08 have similiar advantages, seems like it would be a nice round as well.

What is a good dual purpose load for hunting deer and elk. I've never loaded any 7mm-08. The nearest caliber that I own is a 7x57 Mauser. What is your experience with the 7mm-08?

With regards to competition, the biggest drawback is quality bullets. There are some, but limited. The 6.5 has gained popularity and more bullets are now available. As far as a hunting round, it is excellent!

Great article on loading 7mm/284's for competition, several cartridges including the 7mm-08 discussed:

there are hundreds of 7mm competition bullets available, moreso than the 6.5mm. However, with the resurgence of the 6.5mm in competition, match pills have begun to show up en masse the last 10yrs.

The 7-08 was originally developed as a siloughette competition cartridge IIRC. In a quality rifle, it is a great round.

    skyfish,

    +1 on what JustC said.

If I may expound a little: Sierra makes the most Match bullets for 7mm and they shoot great. Berger makes great match bullets but they have longer ogives and travel downrange further with their higher BC's. they are very accurate. Comparable BC's in .30 cal weigh in usually around 210 gr. and up. So, it takes a lot more oomph to get them out fast enough to use that High BC. Oomph = recoil on your end. The 7mm-08 doesn't have a lot of recoil.

JLK makes some pretty good bullets too. Unfortunately, he only does one or two batches of 7mm But his 168's and 180's are outstanding. I shoot the 180's from my 1-10" twist 7WSM @ about 2730 fps.

If you were to compare Bergers to Sierra's you would see that Sierra's are more blunt. They also have the lead core almost all the way up to the tip. This means it takes more rotation to stabilize them for a given weight. JLK's have a longer Ogive than do Bergers. Those are my two preferences, but any of the three shoot very well for accuracy.

Guys, when I said quality bullets, I come from the benchrest crowd. Off the shelf bullets don't cut it in benchrest. Some are used in 600 yd and 1K yd matches, but they are generally sorted heavily.

Berger makes a fine bullet, as does JLK, and don't forget about GTB. And I still like the 7-08 for many purposes.
