Hornady New Bullet Design

From the Hornady website:

The new Hornady Gilding Metal eXpandingT (GMX) bullets and factory ammunition offer the hunter who favors an expanding monolithic bullet a Better Choice.

GMX bullets are constructed of the same gilding metal used to make ultra-consistent Hornady bullet jackets. Gilding metal doesn't foul like "sticky" solid copper, and strategically located grooves in the bearing surface of the bullet reduce pressure. These additions make the GMX easy to load using standard published data for comparable Hornady SSTr bullets.

Hornady engineers designed the GMX bullet to perform across a very wide range of velocities - from +3,400 to 2,000 fps. And perform it does. GMX bullets are designed to expand to 1.5 times their original diameter and retain over 95% of their original weight. They're no slouch in the penetration department either, routinely penetrating over 30" in gelatin tests.

Gilding Metal eXpandingT

Streamlined design for ultra-flat trajectories

Devastating terminal performance across a wide velocity range

Gilding metal construction and double cannelures reduce fouling.

Compatible with conventional reloading data, and deliver the same external ballistics as SST bullets of the same weight.

I guess what's old is new. The very first jacketed bullets were clad in gilding metal.

The term 'new' as an adjective or descriptor has several meanings and not all are as literal. The 'new' is new to Hornady in their bullet line-up since, as we all know, there is really nothing 'new' under the sun.

Any idea where they will fit in the 'pricing scheme' Closer to standard Hornady prices or more towards Barnes prices?

    sandwarrior,

Just using the 150 gr. as an example:

    MSRP from Hornady:

    150 gr. GMX = $41.40/50*

    150 gr. IB = $66.04/100

    150 gr. SST = $36.71/100

    150 gr. SP = $29.73/100

    Barnes 150 gr. TSX-BT = $38.55/50

    Barnes 150 gr. TTSX-BT = $41.61/50*

    * = comparable

Gilding Metal is defined as an alloy of copper and zinc, a common ratio 95% copper, 5% zinc. This metal alloy has long been used for the manufacture of bullet jackets. The newness of this product is the use of Gilding Metal for the whole bullet, that is, no lead core.
