what is 'non canister' powder?

non mortuusnon mortuus Member Posts: 649 ✭✭✭✭
I sometimes read handloader magazine, and there have been pieces about various new factory loadings that say sometime to effect 'this round uses non canister powder'.
I'm not really sure what to make of this... do it mean the powder used is a mystery/unknown? or that its known but just isn't available to reloaders? or maybe it means something else??

many thanks

I believe they are refering to bulk or surplus powder, I believe.

This means that we have a tough if not impossible task of matching their ballistics which encourages the public to buy manufactured ammunition as opposed to the components to reload.

This is the same deal they pull with there Light and Heavy Magnum loads and their TAP ammo too, isn't it?

    non mortuus,

"...or that its known but just isn't available to reloaders?"

This is the essential answer but then add what is stated above, it's powder manufactured and sold in bulk to the Gubment or commercial ammunition manufacturers. This is the stuff that's blended to match certain specifications for burn rate, pressure and velocity but it doesn't match the specs of what is released to the public.

One of the current examples is the RCM cartridges made by Hornady which are loaded with their proprietary powder which is unavailable to the public. This means that we have a tough if not impossible task of matching their ballistics which encourages the public to buy manufactured ammunition as opposed to the components to reload.

    Best.

    ADDED:

Yes. I was just trying to save some typing...[:I]

    Best.

Canister powders are the powders you can buy in 1lb to 15 pound cans (canisters), in addition to being sold in 10,000 lb totes to manfactures and arsonals.

Non-Canister powders are the powders that are only sold in 10,000 pound tote containers.

Yes Martha, you too can buy "Non-Canister" powders, as long as your willing to purchase it 5 tons at a time (check with your local fire marshall about storeage requirments first).
