I'm sure nononsense can spread some light on this subject for you.

    frisky-maddog,

Not only is it possible but there are several versions! I have used the .17 Ackley Hornet for a number of years. Mild, accurate, easy to load for except for getting powder into the case. Unless you use ball powder, it's a bloody nuisance.

The Hornet can be made by simply necking down the .22 Hornet cases and I always fireforming while working up loads. The Ackley version will need fireforming to achieve the sharper shoulder.

Some additional load data for many of the 17 cal. cartridges:

    thanks nononsense
that information and the following data charts that you have supplied make me really want to load some up and build a rifle to the 17 ackley hornet. where to get dies for this project and also a reamer. already have the 17 barrel blank to work with. i got lucky and recieved it from the freind that lost my scope caps to my weatherby xxii scope on my weatherby. he also gave me his stash of 17 bullets to work with. he can not due the project he was going to start because he lost his loading area due to his unexpected wifes pregency. his fix quit working.
    thanks

Like nononsense says yes it can and has been done. One of the more popular is the 17 Ackley Hornet. Great little cartridge, 3600fps with a 20 Vmax is easy. I haven't gone hotter because it is so accurate at 3600fps and easy on the cases.

    frisky-maddog,

Do you want to own the reamer and do the work yourself? Or would you rather find a gunsmith with the reamer and have him do the work?

Reamers aren't as affordable anymore especially if you want to cut just the one chamber.

    Pacific Tool and Gauge
    JGS
    Manson
    Clymer Tool

You need to decide on the reamer, get a print of the reamer and match the reamer to the dies. Ask questions before purchasing either one. It's not hard but there are several variations to this cartridge so you need to have apples and apples for a successful project.

Without looking, I'll bet that each of the die makers has these in stock or can make some in short order. Well, maybe not...

    Sinclair International

    Bruno's Shooter Supply

    Midway

    Graf & Sons

    Natchez Shooter Supply

    MidSouth

I use an intermediate step 20 caliber die when I neck down 22 cal. cases to hold 17 caliber bullets, other folks don't. I hate to take a chance on ruining these little cases. I did the same thing when necking .221 Fireball down to 17 cal. for the .17 Mach IV. You can do this simply by using a bushing die and just buy the correct bushings for each step. Good lube is your friend.

If you run into a snag, use my e-mail and I'll see if I can help straighten it out.

Ref your die question, Troy Newlon ( www.newlonprecision.com ) makes bushing die blanks. Get the stainless ones, and have them cut with the same reamer as your chamber. You'll need to have the sizing die hard chromed to a thickness of .001 on the inside (post reaming).
This way your dies are a perfect match to your chamber.

Welcome to the world of full custum rifles

    frisky-maddog,

From another source, here is an image of two ways to make cases:

    From left - .22 Hornet, .20 Hornet

From right - .22 KE Hornet, .20 KE Hornet, .17 KE Hornet
