Partial sizing case necks

I've read several articles and posts which indicate sizing case necks down only about 3/4 of the distance to the shoulder may produce greater accuracy. Decied to try it... I neck sized 3 cases this way and pressed in the bullets.

All three developed an expanded ring at the base of the neck (.272 normally, .2795 on the ring) and the shoulders show a slight depression as well.

Boat tail bullets, full diameter well above 3/4 of the neck. 6mm Rem, Remington cases, Redding dies (new). Note the Redding dies included a comment/instructions on how to do this. What am I doing wrong???

If you are crimping when you seat the bullet, you could be causing the shoulder to buckle some.

You really only need to size the part of the neck that contacts the shank of the bullet, and if your showing a slight depression on the shoulder, your not adjusting the die correctly.....

back the body of the seating die off some, and adjust the seater stem down to acheive the OAL you want. It sounds like the body of the die is bulging the shoulder.

Yep... adjusted the seating die, problem solved. Think I was doing this before my 3rd cup of coffee - the one which wakes up my brain. Thanks for the help.
