When shooting competition, is there a time limit between shots? What is the shooting procedure?

    It depends on what type of competition you're referring to.

    Timed handgun events such as speed shooting at targets, obviously not because the shortest time and best score wins.

    Palma (long range) target competition requires you to wait for each shot to be marked before you can shoot again. So there is an enforced time between shots but it might vary depending on the target pit crew.

    Point blank benchrest has some if not most shooters 'run a condition' where all five record shots are made in a short period of time before a wind/mirage condition changes.

    Long range rifle shooting is what I had in mind. Don't know if I will ever get into anything competitive or not, but I try to get all I can out of my riles. The reason for my question was when I was shooting today I was allowing about 4 minutes between my shots to keep the barrel from heating up. Ended up with a .250" group at 100 yards out of my .220 Swift. And didn't know if there were competitions that allowed shooting like that or do I need to shoot faster.

    Every group as well as some of the individual clubs have variations of the general rules. Your best bet is to do a search for the major groups such as the NBRSA, IBS, and Williamsport. This article covers the basics with links to all of the others:

    Don't forget to read about Palma and the newer F-Class competitions. Shooting time get broken down into two parts, each with its own length:
