A CAMP PERRY STORY

walliewallie Member Posts: 8,595 ✭✭✭
On how I went to the U.S. Nationals and hopping to get some interest going to the young shooters.
It's going to take a little time for me to get all my notes and photo's together so check on the up-dates from time to time.
I'm in-between trips so depending on my schedule will determine the length of my story, so hang in there if y'r interested.

Topic's
I built my own Gun
I built an air powered bullet lub sizer
I built my own gripe mount
I shot against Perry Shooter,,O you don't want to miss this story
I have a life time of great memories
I have tons of pic's
I drank in the longest bar in the world? > so they say
I,I,I have a lot to tell but a short time to tell U

One of my dreams was to shoot at the Nationals and I wanted to see if I could build my own 45 and take it as far as i could. At that time U had to weld the barrel hood and squeeze the slide and spend hours of lapping. I made my own barrel links in different lengths and heat treated them. The barrel bushing opening was welded and machined to a tighter fit and hand fitted to the barrel. BUT, I need an edge, I knew that Perry shooter was out there and i knew He was a master at the 45. So I came up with a method of reducing the trigger pull down to 1.5 lbs. Now the rules say min. 3.5 lbs but I'm on barrowed time, I started late in life to meet this challenge and I had a long way to go so I needed a loophole. I devised a method in a way that I could change the trigger pull from 1.5 to 5.0 lbs by inserting an allen wrench into a hole in the frame.
All my life nobody paid any attention to me,so i figure if u don't jump out ahead nobody will see u.

Now come's the practice and practice and practice,,,I practiced so much, me and my friend couldn't reload fast enough. So I needed another loophole, with my friend being handicapped we looked for shortcuts in reloading and came up with this Saeco Airpowered Lub Sizer

I was doing good but I wanted to do better faster. If only I would of started shooting competition at an earlier age. I needed another loophole. Iron sights was giving me a problem at my age, I need a scope on my 45. My friend said a "SCOPE", It'll fall the HELL off and he was right. After a little while I lost zero then the dam thing fell off. My friend said Wallie, U are ready for the Nationals,,,,,, And I told him he was crazy,,,I said U know that Perry Shooter he was one of the top 10 that was picked for the MAYLEIGH CUP TEAM in the NATION,,,, and do U know what I won in that last match "A STINKING PIECE OF BALONEY" and u want me to go up against the BEST in the Nation
I wanted this

But,, O NO, They gave me this "LOUSY STINKING PIECE OF BALONEY"

Well,we went out and got drunk and we got to laughen about putting
the scope on the frame and then the grip mount came into play. So this is one of them but for some reason this one was never used.
I remember going to a match and I was the only one with a scope on my 22 & 45 with a gripe mount.

My friend said, Wallie, now your ready, I said I'm going to ask my good friend John Goodhart. John is long gone now, but I asked him then, Goody, am I ready. He [:D][:D][:D]and said, Wallie nobody is ever ready for the Nationals. U could be the best but at the Nationals under pressure your shooting can go to hell. Just go and relax and have fun. We'll go to the longest bar in the world Put-in-Bay and get drunk and the next morning will kick *.

Okay, I'm ready, I'm going to US Nationals
I packed everything, then I checked and repacked
then I checked and repacked
I packed in 20's...20 pairs of tee shirts 20 pairs of drawers
I had 20 shirts 20 pants, I had coats for rain sun storm I must of had 20 coats sweaters comb. And i was only staying for 5 days, I had 6 suitcases
When I got there they put me in this little hut with 2 other guy's and we had a great time. I forgot their names but I do remember the guy in the middle tell us that he had Christmas with 2 Presidents
WOOW!!! He was a Security Guard at the White House
Well, when I came in with 6 suitcases, they asked me how long i was staying. After taking everything back to the car I couldn't find my ammo. Yep, U guessed it,I forgot 9,000 rounds of 45's and 4,500 rounds of 22's

Back in my days when shooters traveled from every corner of the United States with loads of guns on route to the Nationals in Ohio we were protected with this law section 926A of title 18
With the changing gun laws I wonder if this is still in affect

Hey Hey you done good the drawings are great. BTW the allen wrench does not fit a screw in the frame "it fits in a screw in the Main-spring housing" you could change the way it contacted the 3 leaf spring to change the trigger pull about 3/4 of a pound this modification is NOT allowed in the DCM/CMP EIC Match BUT is sort of like the Adjustment screw on a High Standard Trophy and Victor . If you go to Perry one thing you will not be able to do is FLY out to the Island on a Commercial Ford Tri Motor like the one sold on Barret Jackson this week and you will not be able to eat in the Mess Hall "It was damaged by Tornado and then RAZED" they served man-hole-covers but called them Waffles and the stuffed cabbage rolls were good for 10 trips to the porta-potty the next day during the match.[xx(] I will watch for update to your post . Now a few questions when do you get a Custer Metal hint they come in bronze Silver And Gold who receiver the Oglethorpe trophy what is the Mayleigh Challenge Cup and who was ELIHU ROOT and why should I know all the answers [?][?][?] "PRAISE THE HARD-BALL GUN"

Edit Hello Gee Guy Yes you West "bygod" Virginia guys have won the Oglethorpe Trophy Team match from time to time However us East Virginia's did it 1978 1992 2002 and my last year 2005 The Custer Metal is given to those that place in the top TEN % of the shooters in the Individual Ball match. Elihu Root has a metal named after him for the Top 4 shooters out of all the shooters on any team no matter if their team won or not and The Coach & Captain of the winning team I made it 3 times as Captain and once as shooter. With that said Deloris and Ed Williams, Herman Sage, Sandy Latimer, and all the other Summersville W.Va people are some of the finest shooters and people to ever fire a pistol

One more question looking at picture of salute field piece Do you think that a piece of styafoam at the front of the chamber with a dozen golf balls poured down the muzzle clear the 1000 yard range and end up in the lake when the field piece is fired the next morning? [}:)][;)][:p][:I]

EDit #2 The Foam was so when they were loading it and looking in the chamber it would look like white clouds up the bore[:p] and no foam did not make the lake just looked like fine snow among the smoke "they use Black powder as the salute charge" at the start of the match each day before the star spangled banner and flag raising but the golf balls did [:D]

To jump in on the thread:
Karl: The Oglethorpe Trophy is for the top civilian team at Perry, which was last won by West VA in 2003, but currently resides with the OHIO group as of 2008 (3 of the guys were on my local team). I'm guessing you know this trophy because you won it one of the 4 yrs between 1982 and 2003 w/WV.
Mayleigh Challenge Cup is a Posal Match that is open to teams worldwide.
Elihu Root was the Secretary of War that helped save Camp Perry, not sure the year.
    Custer Medal -??
I assume your relationship with the last two was that you were there with Custer and Elihu.

I look forward to your educational response so we can all learn something.

Again, sorry to butt in, but I'm interested in your history lesson.

Edit: I don't believe the foam would make it to the lake for several reasons.
    1. The mass vs. velocity would not allow the foam to travel that far.
    2. They are not allowed to polute the lake with the foam.
    3. The eagles would swoup down and take the foam before it hit the lake, but then that would stop the matches until they determined it wasn't a fish.
    4. I've sailed around the Perry range and never saw foam floating.
    5. I've never actually seen the cannon fire, so it can't have happened.

I was thinking you were on the WV team, not the VA team, otherwise I would have remembered the 2005 victory.

    Thanks for the lesson.
