IMR SR-4990

malbillymalbilly Member Posts: 21 ✭✭
I recently came in possession of almost a pound of IMR SR-4990 smokeless powder. Does anyone have any experience using this powder or have load data available?

From my research, I found out that it is very similar to Hi-Skor 700x. It is a fast burning powder so my thought was to use it in my .45 A.C.P.

Any advice would be appreciated.

You better call the customer service line to get data - info on this public forum would not be what I would load and shoot.

I've never heard of the stuff, but the "SR" would indicate it's for Sporting Rifles. Doesn't sound like something you'd use in a 45.

It is almost certainly a non-canister powder. That means it does not have a standardized recipe or performance standards. Non-canister powders are sold to ammo companies in bulk, and it is up to them to develop load data for that individual batch of the powder. When it is gone, they have to develop all new data for the next (and different) batch.

The upshot is that there will likely not be any load data for it. The best that an IMR rep could tell you would be that it is in a fairly broad burn rate range - if he's even willing to do that, which is unlikely given the variability of non-canister powders.

The short answer is that you are very much on your own with an unknown powder. May your first trigger pull NOT be exciting.
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.
