FYI making 8X57 from 30-06

I made 100 8X57 cases from old 30-06 brass. the key to success was a good annealing of the 06 neck with a propane torch and a quick quench in water. I then ran them into the 8X57 die with lube on the inside of the neck and outside the neck down to the shoulder. They went right into the die, no problem. Using a drill to spin the trimmer worked great to cut the 3/8" of extra neck on the brass. They were all trimmed to 2.240. The one fire formed case I had time to do looks great!

If you have a mil-surp 8MM Mauser and need to make brass this is a cheapo way to do it. It takes a bit of time, but that is the fun of our hobby!

Making 8x57 from 30-06 is easy and economical. I'd ad just one word of caution. I always found it to be prudent to use "military brass" to avoid the "30-06" head stamp. 8x57 rounds will chamber in an '06 and the result is not pretty.

I've done it a lot too. I've also made 7mm Mauser and 7.65 Mauser from 06. Though for those sometimes I have to neck ream if using military brass.

I have about 400 cases for the 8x60 Magnum that were formed that way, and thats fine except they used a .318 bullet for a .323 chamber....

    bpost1958,

I've done it with 7.65 a bunch. In fact some of my best loads were with LC match brass.[:D] Good fact to remind people of from time to time.
