.30carbine for whitetail

shtakshtak Member Posts: 11 ✭✭
This is not to start a war on hunting caliber ethics!

I'm wondering if a 30carbine can be loaded w/ a soft point expandable type bullet to be used by my daughter for deer. She shoots very good with umc ball ammo but is spooky with other guns. I figure at 50yds she is more than capable but would like to have a better bullet also.

Yes, it can be loaded with SP bullets.
    BUT
    IMHO,get her a real deer gun.........a .243 bolt gun.
    And never look back.
    Just my 2c worth.

Took my first deer with a 30 carbine at about 50-75 yds. I think I was using Win HP but not sure. It ran only about 30 yds and collapsed, shot placement is everything.

    +1 on shot placement,
    -10 on carbine for deer.
There's a vast difference between what will kill an animal (a .22 l.r. will do that),
and what can be counted on to humanely harvest an animal under a wide range of highly variable, in the field, real life situations.

30 carbine is fine for short range deer.

I know its not allowed for deer hunting in south dakota. I wanted to take one with my dads because i used his ( now mine) m1 garand to shoot my second deer with and thought it would be cool to take one with the carbine also.

30 carbine is fine for short range deer?

At best an "experts" choice. A round for a seasoned hunter who knows his deer anatomy and the limitations of the round and his (or her) own ability under the circumstances. Lots of deer leave the wood after dark after falling to a quiet rimfire. .22 magnum is even legal in some places. Still doesn't make the .30 C. a choice for a first time hunter. The game and the hunter both deserve the proper tool.

If you are going to stick to 50 yds or so, go with 410, or 20ga slugs are great for that close a range, hardly any kick with 410.

I read that Minnesota last year allowed this round for deer. I think its a little anemic but if the shot were placed right I suppose it would do with the right bullet. HANDLOADER JUST DID A MAJOR PIECE ON IT AND FOUND THAT WITH THEIR PARTICULAR FIREARM IT WOULD NOT CYCLE HOLLOWPOINTS. Sorry about the all caps it was an accident. [:I]

Many will tell you that a 357 mag is fine for deer but yet they will tell you that 30 carbine isn't. Interesting that the 30 carbine has twice the MV and twice the energy that the 357mag has. I have killed several deer with my M1. I use it in the swamps for deer when we are hunting with dogs. I never have had a problem with it stopping a deer yet with soft points.

I was afraid it would come to this. Thanks for the responses though!!

So far as the capabilities i know this is a lethal firearm. The ability of an M1 to kill deer, daughters markmanship, patience and knowledge of deer is not at question. She has shot my M1 for several years and has been sitting in a stand with me since she was 4(now 17). Where we hunt their is plenty of deer so waiting for the right shot is no issue. We have tried my .410 double with 2 3/4 shells and even to me it has more felt recoil than the M1.She has killed turkeys with the 410 but is still not comfotable with practice shooting. She is barely 5' so the M1 just fits her better also.Although I'd love to use this as an excuse to buy another gun, the funds don't really allow it so I'm trying to improve the efficiency of something we are already efficient with.

Hopefully that part is understood,we will be using this gun, without reservations.I'm asking for a suggestion of a paricular factory loaded bullet first. If there isn't one readily available then what is your opinions on a bullet fitting my needs I could have a freind reload for us.

I use the Remington 110 SP bullet with a mixture of Remington brass and Winchester brass. I am not going after MOA here so I am not to particular as to the brass. I do like the Remington 110 SP bullet. Below is a link to some loads for the 30 Carbine. For factory loads the Remington SP worked fine for me until I started to reload for this round. I think the bullet was a 110 Cor-Lok.

I prefer 16.5(max) of IMR 4227 which gives me just over 1950 FPS @ just under 1000 FPE. This is more than adequate up to 100 yards to kill a deer.

You can brouse different factory loads here. There are other places to buy from as well. The reviews may be helpful to you.

    Thanks guys
Thats exactly what I was looking for. After lurking on these forums for a while I knew this was the place to get the right answers.
Never imagined there would be such a variety of factory ammo available.
    Thanks again

You say she can really shoot the 30. Better a dead on the money shot than a better caliber a little off. A 30 does not in anyway compare to a "real" deer rifle hunting round, but many people handgun hunt. The 30 stacks up just fine compared to most handguns, so I would say why not.

for several years the Vermont state record buck was one that was killed by a .30 carbine in the hands of a 16 year old kid. Keep the range short and don't take any angled shots, put as many in the chest as you can before he falls or runs off .

You ought to see if you can buy frangible ammuntion for the .30 Carbine. I have 2 of them, and I don't see one dropping a deer in it's tracks, but with something like Extreme Shock Ammo, I bet it would.

A friend of mine built a pistol on an ar15 reciever, chambered for .30 carbine. He loads it with 200 grain bullets, which fit nicely in the ar madazine. don't know what this crono's at, but he seems to be happy with his creation.

I used to look at numbers all the time and then tried to judge a rifle, and after almost 40yrs. of shooting and 3+ tours in the Misguided Children (and I say that proudly) I've come to realize there is more to any rifle then the numbers. Placement counts first, the numbers come in handy when you don't have good placement, develop her marksmanship, the rifle will do the job. Biggest whitetail I ever saw dropped with my own two eyes was by little 105lb. gal with a .30 carbine in 1970 when I was home on leave for deer hunting in Wisconsin. Punched both lungs, ran 35yds. 10pts. don't know the wieght, but it took three grown men most of the afternoon to drag it .7 mile.
