Another Primer Question

calrugerfancalrugerfan Member Posts: 18,209
I am just getting into reloading. I got an RCBS single stage press and a powder trickler for free. Everything else I have to purchase. Anyway, I am going to a gun show in Antioch, CA this weekend hoping to pick up primers (I will get other stuff if I have the money, but primers seem to be the hardest to find). I currently have a 44 magnum and a 45 ACP. I know that I need "Large Pistol Primers." What I want to know is: Do I need magnum primers for the 44? Also, is there anything that I should avoid? Or should I just get what I can?

Eventually I want to get into casting my own bullets but I figure I should take it one step at a time.

If you are going to load full power 44 Magnum loads with slow burning powder such as Winchester 296, I would get some magnum primers. If you are going to load moderate loads with powders such as Unique, you don't need magnum primers.

I was thinking of AA#5 or AA#9. I don't remember which is suggested for 44 magnum and I don't have the book in front of me right now. But what about brands to avoid? And if I have the choice, which is the best? (Obviously, with experience, I'll find what works best for me, but starting out, I would like to rely on the experience of others.)

I loaded 44mag for years with 2400 and H-110. The only primer I used was the Win. Large Pistol. Never had problems with them.
Used the same ones for about 50,000 rd. of 45ACP.
H-110 and 296 call for loads that don't give you much leeway in the data.

IF all you can get is Magnum primers ,I'd buy them and just use mid-range load data with them. These days a guy has to buy what is available just about.
and be prepared for MAJOR sticker shock. ie; fifty bucks or MORE per thousand i'm guessing.

So can any large pistol primers be made to work? It sounds like I should obtain primers THEN decide on the other components to coincide.

For somebody with no experience, $50 for 1,000 doesn't seem bad at all. What SHOULD the price be?

A year ago they were in the $15/K range, and the big reloading suppliers around here (Williams Gun Sight and Guns Galore) are up to IIRC about $23/K now IOW a 50% increase in the last 6 months

I guess that it is sort of anything else. If you are used to paying $10 to go the movies, it's no big deal. If you are used to paying 25 cents, it's a little different. I know that that is an extreme as a lot more time has passed for that price increase, but it was the only example I could think of.

How about gas going from $2/gal to $3/gal ?

Keep in mind that no manufacturer puts a "bad" primer on the market.

Any large pistol primer will work if you match it to the correct

    propellant.

Don't go to all that fuss and bother. Just buy standard large pistol primers. They'll make any load in either cartridge go BANG!!! [:D]

No offense, but simply going BANG isn't what I'm going for. I'd really like the round to be accurate and reliable as well.

No offense taken. I'm just saying that a standard primer has plenty of poop to do what you need done. I think magnum primers are just a selling gimmick. [;)][:D]

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I thought you meant to just throw any primer with any amount of powder and put a bullet in. Obviously not what I want.

Neither would I. I've been reloading since the 1960's. I've never used a magnum primer, in rifle or pistol.
