Just ordered a dies set and some 140 gr nosler ballistic tips to reload for my remington 700 varmint special. anyone got any loads they particularly like. these are for paper punching, not hunting.

I'm not an expert, but i did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

    Just got a BLR in 7mm-08 and I hate to buy factory bullets. Can anyone suggest a load for whitetails? Most of my shooting will be in the 50 yd range (I hunt in a swamp) and I want ot use the heaviest bullet I can for this round.

    Here another..just bought a 7mm-08 cal new , a Howa 1500, apart from the rubber stock ,now cured with a boyds :) it a fine made rifle. but......here we go !!

    after just over a 100 rounds thru her, (cooled & cleaned every 5 shots) various factory ammo, federal, Winchester, norma etc she does a 1" zero from the box , so ok for new , I expect it to get better with use ...maybe , so @ 100yard 1" , take it to 200yard & best she do is 4" Hmmmmmm (not good) on a 4" steel gong ! take it to 300 yds with any ammo 120gr 140gr , 150gr or any home loads with various loads of between 36gr - 42 gr of powder & she will not group at all under 8" . I have checked the scope, mounts, ammo, crown....where do I go now ?? any ideas guys are welcome :)Thanks

    Does anyone use the 7mm-08 for competition shooting. I know a lot of people talk of the 6.5 right know over the 7.62N. But does the 7mm-08 have similiar advantages, seems like it would be a nice round as well.

    What is a good dual purpose load for hunting deer and elk. I've never loaded any 7mm-08. The nearest caliber that I own is a 7x57 Mauser. What is your experience with the 7mm-08?

    These two are similar cartridges as far as performance is concerned. The 7x75 Mauser has the edge in capacity but depending on the rifle being used, is factory loaded to a lower operating pressure because of SAAMI. The 7mm-08 is a modern cartridge design based on the .308 Win. case, which puts it in the higher operating range of similar cartridges.

    I'm not going to argue the merits of certain rifle designs but push comes to shove, the 7x57 Mauser has a slight edge on the 7mm-08 as long as you're loading for the generic M98 Mauser or newer rifle. We're not talking much, 100 FPS or less depending on the powder and barrel length. The real difference is that the 7mm-08 is slightly more efficient making it a better choice in my opinion for a modern rifle.

    If you intend to use just one load for both deer and elk, most of us will suggest that you lean towards the more heavily designed hunting bullets. Something like the 160 gr. Nosler Partition would be fine and harvest both animals easily so long as your bullet placement is proper. Going heavier with the 175 gr. NPT on this case works to limit velocity because the bullet uses more capacity and results in similar energy to the slightly lighter bullets in the 160 gr. range.

    The powders of choice will be AA-XMR-4064, Ramshot Hunter and V V N-550. These 3 have performed the best for me with the heavier hunting bullets.

    The 7mm-08 is fine cartridge for either hunting or some target shooting if that strikes your fancy.

    Purchased a Tikka in 7mm08 maybe a year ago. Love the rifle and really love the round. Very accurate and no recoil.

    In a 22" barrel using 42 grs of Accurate 4064 I am getting MV average of 2867 and energy of 2490 with a Barnes 140gr Triple Shock X. The 4064 meters really well.[8D]

    I want to get a barrel for my Encore pistol now in 7mm08. It would make a nice low recoil deer round in a 15" barrel.

    After doing some reading, I'm going to load the Hornady 162 grain SST. This will be with 47 grains of H4350. The rifle is used by my 17 year old nephew. His family lives in western Montana. Will this be a good load for hunting in Montana?

    In my 7x57, I load 175 grain roundnose bullets. That's just my personal preferance.

    I have used the 154 SST(bullets are 3-4 years old) on deer and found them to be pretty soft. On the order of the original Nosler 140 BT in terms of expansion. I don't know if the current 162's are stiffer or if or if my lot of 154's are just really soft.

    I too have found the SST bullets to be a bit soft and explosive. I have used the Hornady A-Max and achieved better results. The A-Max may be designated as a target bullet, but they still expand well and hold together better than the SST's do. Also think about the Berger 168 Hunting bullet. These pills are death on anything that walks the North American continent.
