Does anyone know a good bullet to start out with? Im thinking about a 200 grain bullet. My only question is how would it fair with a 1000 yard shot? Also does anyone have any tips or can suggest a site that explains the variants, techniques, and phyics of long distance shooting. Just looking for a challenge and some knowledge about distance shooting. Thanks in advance for any help!!

A 168gr boolit will be best for long distance IMO
look at 6mmbr.com and you will get allllllll kinds of info.
as far as actual learning,..you need someone with some experience to accompany you to the range,..and get started. The book "precision shooting at 1000yds" is a good book to gather info on the various things you will encounter.

190gr-200gr would be just right for 1000yd work. I run anywhere from 200-220gr in the 300RUM. Balistic coefficient trumps speed every day of the week.

Sinclair International has a good selection of books that will help you with the process of long range shooting. But there is really no substitute for having a shooting partner at the range with you. The learning curve will be much faster.
A new record was just set at 1,000 yards in a benchrest competition at Hawks Ridge. The shooter used BIB FLATBASE bullets by Randy Robinett. 10-shots temporarily measured just a pinch over 3", something like 3.048".
Unless I'm shooting a lot further than 1,000 yards and using some imported specialized bullets, I stick with the 210 gr. Berger VLD bullets made right here in the U.S. These are superb in the .300 Win. Mag. or any of the other slightly larger capacity cases. If you feel that a little more velocity is necessary, I'd try the 185 gr. or 190 gr. Berger VLDs also. Another manufacturer of top quality VLD bullets is JLK. Give Swampworks a call, he can help you out.
Powders fall in the slow to slower category: Re-22 or 25 along with Retumbo, MagPro, XMR-3100, IMR-7828, Ramshot Magnum or V V N-560.
Great glass is mandatory for comfortable, accurate shooting at the longer ranges. Don't skimp here.
Best.
In 300 Win Mag, most of us shooting it, use the 210 Berger VLDs. I use H4831 powder with Fed 210 primers. Seat the bullets just into the lands. You will want the load producing about 2875 to 2950 FPS. This will give you a load that will be competitive at 1000 yards. Probably some where around 68.5 to 71 grains, depending on what brass you are using.
Also, like another person said, don't skimp on the scope. I use Nightforce or Leupold, and around 20 to 25 power, so I don't Magnify the mirage. And use a 20 minute tilt scope base to allow for extra elevation adjustment.
If you are looking at benchrest shooting, I am selling my heavy gun and getting ready to lest a light gun shortly. Both in 300 Win Mag.

Perfect! Now let us know what the Auction number is and we'll all be happy to take a look at it or maybe even post a bid...
Best.
Again thanks for the advice and taking a look at the auction. Warning, this is no ordinary bench rifle.
I'm 2.5 Grains over MAX. Still no pressure signs, not even a flat primer, 3150fps. Std dev is a little high at ~40fps i think it has to do with the case not being filled with powder.
