Primers

I am a newbie to reloading so please do not laugh. I am going to reload for a 45 auto and a 380 auto. I plan on using Winchester primers. Large pistol for the 45 Auto? Small pistol for the 380 Auto? mttrapper[:)]

Just curious, if I do not have the exact primers that are called for in the recipe is it ok to use something different? Cases, same question? What if used Winchester cases instead of Nosler, FC, Remington, etc?

    Thanks

Hi; I'm new to reloading, and need an answer.
I have a new LEE turret press, and i insert a new primer on the up stroke, after punching out the old primer. The manuals i read say not to touch the primers. My question is, How do I put the primer into the primer insertion piece without using my fingers? Thanks; Mike

How much difference is there in brands of primers? I haven't been re-loading long and used mainly WSP and some CCI. With the lighter loads I use, I find that CCI seems to leave my gun much dirtier than WSP.
If I try a different brand, should I load a few and chrono them for comparison?

I am beginning to reload 40S&W. One of my manuals list winchester WSP primers and another list CCI 500 small pistol primers. I am loading 165 grns FMJ over power pistol powder. I want to know what is the different in the two primers and are they interchangable. Thank for any information.

how do you determine what primer to use??? Some say to use a small pistol primer for the 22 hornet. Why Not a small rifle primer??? I dont know and Iam just learning. I have all the newest reloading manuals from speer and hornady vol.7 but they dont tell you how to derive at a specific primer like they do powders or am I just not reading far enough. You guys seem to know your stuff and have helped me in the past. Thank you Oakie

It's the same reason as the shortage for anything connected to ammunition and reloading - Obama. People are panicking because there's talk of a 500% tax on guns, ammo and related products. Go to Cheaper Than Dirt or any other site that sells this stuff and you'll see "Out of Stock" on just about everything. I can still buy 1,000 Federal Match Primers locally for about $30 (I'm not telling you where) but some primers are selling on GB right now for over $150. It's like the 1973 gas shortage when people were filling their tanks when they were still 3/4 full. People are buying for lifetime needs, not what they need for right now.

    crappiefish,

    Welcome to the Gunbroker Forums!

If you have a search engine that you like to use, type in the terms 'rifle and pistol primers for sale' and you should get a list of merchants that have primers ready for sale.

The area I live in doesn't have a shortage right now as the shelves are full and the merchants have suppliers with stock.

The shortage originally stemmed from the lack of facilities to produce them in the quantities that the Feds needed them for the wars that we're fighting and for training. This applies to 5.56 and 7.62 NATO components also. They have closed all of the facilities except for a couple and they have a tough time keeping up with just the military needs. ATK operates Lake City and they own Federal Ammunition so the two get tied together and the supply goes to the Feds first. That's a really abbreviated mention and there is more but I don't type that fast...

ATK also owns Speer, Federal, RCBS and Weaver.

    Best.

Hey guys, new to the forum. But i check in and read here and there. I have only been into reloading for about 2 full years now. On and off since i was 10, dad was a reloader/dealer so i was always into it somewhat. I was going to start a new topic but i saw this and thought it fit the subject. For you guys that have been reloading for a long time, has there ever been a "crisis" where components were as scarce as they are now?

NO! I have never seen prices zoom to the moon like they are either.

Back in 94 I saw a shortage of primers, I'm still using some of the ones that I bought then. Nothing like it is now.

Some of you reading this need to realize that this may not go away anytime soon. As a 20 year Vet in the Corp I have come to the understanding it is due or die (so to speak). You can keep your guns but, if you have no ammo what are they good for, paper weights. Semper Fi.[B)]

Marinegunny; I'm with you on this one! I'm too old to change so I really don't give a damn what Obama, and his lefties say! I'll be looking for a cabin in Idaho, where I'll DO or Die!!!!!!!!!!

5000 #34 military CCI SR primers sold at GB auction today for $471.00 plus shipping and hazmat, no joke.

That is 10 cents each for primers and I can remember loading 223; bullet, powder and primer for less than 10cents each in the 90's

During the early 1970s there was a component shortage, mainly primers, which was attributed to the Vietnam war.

Don't want to come across as doom and gloom but I bet the anti gun folks are dancing first stop making enough primers to reload . THINK about It we can make everything else maybe not smokeless powder but we can make black. Then they pass laws to stop sales of ammo [:(]. No need to outlaw guns. Keep your FLINT lock we may need them.

Hey guys, I have shopped around and stayed on some back order lists and found some primers at normal retail cost. They are available in some places. The gluts that are buying up 10 and 20 thousand lots aren't helping matters.

First timer here, I came in to ask a question about magnum pistol primers and found many sites to answer my question. So, instead of ruining the fun of the hunt I'll just say that they are limiting us to 2 boxes of 100 a piece down here in San Antonio.

My gun guy is dinging folks $70.00 for a brick of 1,000.

And, yes, I bought a brick.

Because nobody has any within a 100-mile radius.

    Bummer.

that was the price. Take it or leave it.

It's sickening and I for one won't buy at that price. I'd sooner not shoot. But it is capitalism- if people will pay that price I say more power to the seller. He can be an SOB and I'll still not condemn him totally.
