Remington bench rest primers

Never tried them, but they were available at the local shop today at a reasonable price($29.90 per thousand). Do I need to use these differently than the Winchester small rifle I usually use? Such as not use them in certain rifles, cartridges, or loads?? I don't like changing components, but some are getting hard to come by these days.

Load them as you do normally do. Benchrest primers are just made more carefully then regular ones. They are supposed to be more uniform, the cream of the crop.

ANY TIME you change a component you should back off the powder weight and work back up again..... Just for safety's sake if nothing else......

I think you're refering to the Remington 7 1/2? They were designed to be used in the .222 Remington class of cartridges and have a little thicker cup than the 6 1/2. I use them a lot in my rifles (and, as recommended, in a .357 MaXimum revolver) and find no performance difference from Winchester WSR. However, mrbruce has given you good advice!

What are rem 6 1/2 used for??
I bought 1000 at a gun show,
told the "guy" I needed primers
for a 223 and he sold me rem 6 1/2
said they would work fine??
I am new to rifle reloading

270cowboy; My records show I've used Rem 6 1/2 quite often in my .222 Rem rifles--especially with IMR4198 powder. I've used them less often in my .223 bolt action rifles. As I mentioned earlier, the Rem 7 1/2 was designed with a thicker/tougher cup in response to the higher pressure generated by the .222 class of cartridges (less chance of blanking or peircing). (See the advice by 243winxb.) I don't know this for sure but there may be an issue with slam fires in some self-loading .223's with Rem 6 1/2's. The "black gun" experts would know more about that than this old bolt gun guy!

As an aside, it's NEVER a good idea to accept the counsel of a seller at a gun show!!

If you go to Remington's website and look through the FAQ they have a statement there that says the 6 ? Small Rifle Primer was primarily designed for the 22 Hornet. They do NOT recommend the 6 1/2 be used in reloading cartridges for the 17 Remington; the 222 Remington; the 223 Remington; the 204 Ruger; or the 17 Remington Fireball. For those calibers Remington recommends their 7 1/2 Small Rifle Bench Rest Primer.
