Dillon primer problems

badhabithobbybadhabithobby Member Posts: 216 ✭✭✭
I just changed over my press to load some .38's and am having trouble with the primers flipping over and entering the primer pocket the wrong way. Happens about 1 in 20. Also getting a few blanks where no primer will load. Any suggestions.

Is your primer feed tube in correctly? I had that problem once and it was because I didn't have the feed tube turned right and seated properly.

Mike at Dillon told me to replace the end of the tube and correctly align the index slot with the tab on the end and allow the top cap to seat the assembly as it is screwed in and just snug it gently. Didn't help a bit.
The Dillon system sucks and I dont use it anyway for the same reason you are having problems.
No primer, upside down primer, sideways smashed primer, primer falling off inside the mechanism and having to take priming system off to repair etc. The no BS warranty is all BS. The primers wont even slide down the tube from the filler to the magazine without the last 5
hanging up and falling all over the place when you try to fix it. I just start with a sized, primed case and no die in the first station, No problems.
Dillon is LEE painted blue I think.

some tiimes changing the alinement helps, I've got thousands of round through mine with very few problems (mostly dirt build-up or alinement). I supect b17-p51 has problems opening a can of soda [;)].

It would help to know which model. I have had that problem with the Square Deal. In calling Dillon (who was very helpful to me) they had me adjust the very small screw in the primer feed tube area to assure the line up through the shell holder was perfect. The directions do not even show this as an adjustment, but it's there. Once completed, no more problems.

Also, keep the tube at least half full as it seems to help the primers from flipping. This also assumes the table does not bounce.

I hand prime on my match ammo since I clean each pocket, but I never have had much of a problem you state with the Dillon for regular ammo loading. I may get 1 of each 100 with a high primer or flipped, but not 1 of 20.

Good luck, keep trying Dillon. They have always been very good to me.

My guess is that your primer seating problem is caused by your not aligning the primer cup with the base plate.

With the primer assembly slightly loose on the press, repeatedly perform the priming action (no shell/no primer) and watch the primer cup engaging the base plate. The primer cup should not catch on the side of the base plate. Tighten the screws holding the primer assembly to the press. Insure that the primer cup does not catch on the side of the base plate. If it does, then loosen and re-align until it doesn't. If the primer cup catches on the base plate, the springing action that occurs when it frees itself will often flip the primer, causing sideways primers or upside down primers.

Upside down only primers are often caused by not getting a clean drop of primers from the primer loading tube to the primer drop tube on the press. All primers should drop freely into the primer drop tube when you pull the hair pin clip from the primer loading tube. For a clean drop, make sure you are holding the loading tube verically straight with the drop tube when you pull the hair pin clip.

I hope this all makes sense.

I probably couldn't open a can of soda, since I don't drink the stuff, but would thoroughly enjoy completley removing the top from some Wiskey, should the opportunity ever present itself.

It also might be the brand of primers your using. Both of my Dillon 650's really only prefer Federal Primer's. I know this goes against what Dillon reccommends, however literally after 65,000 loaded rounds and no foul ups using Federal, this speaks volumes for me. When I attempt to use Remington or Winchester Primers all sorts of issues arise, from flipped primmers to the very dangerous primers jamming in the alighnment wheel, locking the whole thing up. So for me I use only Federal and nothing else and no primer issues at all.

Turned out I never switched the primer tube. A 30 second fix and I was back in business. Thanks everyone.
