Help me with a new cleaning rod

flyingtorpedoflyingtorpedo Member Posts: 1,301 ✭✭✭✭✭
Long story short, I need a new cleaning rod. I'm not sure if I should get a one piece rod or a pull through cleaning kit or if it really matters much. It will be used most of the time on my garand and M1A. I have a muzzle gaurd for them. Also have a Rock River NM on the way and I hope it will be here before too much longer. Just thought I would ask other's opinion and stuck it here so no worry about it getting locked. Thanks.

I use one-piece Dewey steel cleaning rods. I am particular about bore guides and muzzle guides, I use them always. I also keep clean rags handy to wipe the rod clean after each pass. My theory, and it is only my theory, is that I will impart zero wear or damage to my rifle bores if I use a stiff rod that is centered without ever touching the bore, and never drag any grit or debris into the bore, using a clean rod, clean patches and brushes and proper solvents. I also clean an M1A and M1 Garand, as well as many others. I don't think a .22 sized rod is stiff enough for the larger bores, so I have several different rods appropriate to each bore size.

Dewey or Bore-tech and get a bore guide as well.

I'll put a big thumbs down to Bore Tech. The coating on their rods are worthless, and when they wear they create rough edges that is not what you want in your barrel. Plus, they won't replace anything. Some guarantee! Great handles and bearings though, what a shame the rod sucks.

Dewey is great as well as Pro-Shot. The Dewey coated rods I have are now about 15 years old, ad they are as good today as when I bought them. The Pro-Shot stainless rods are great too, and I'm favoring them over a coated rod now. Many top smiths and barrel makers are suggesting stainless rods over coated.

By all means, a bore guide is just as important as the rod. Mike Lucas guides are hard to beat and not terribly expensive.

I shoot competitively and clean way more than most.

For Christmas I received a couple Tipton carbon fiber rods and I really like them, but used Dewey rods before I got those Tipton rods.

PA Shootist is a very smart shooter!!!! I do exactly the same thing and have never had a barrel go bad yet. I take vewry good care to not scrape or rub the side of the landings and my dewey rods are coated. I clean AR-15s so a bore guide won't work but I would use one of those if I could.
