reloading for the 7.62 x 39 in .308

Does anyone have info to pass on for reloading this caliber in .308. I'm trying to get a good load going for a Colt AR with 16" barrel.

Are you trying to load a .308" bullet in a 7.62x39 case? It will take a smaller expander button and will not be very accurate in your Colt. Load data will be the same for same bullet weight, pressure will be less. The Ruger Mini-30 attempted to make a barrel that would handle .308 to .311 bullets. It worked, but was not very accurate.

Yes pearyw, I changed the expander ball out on the resizing die to .308, and changed the powder drop tube to a .30 carbine so to allow putting a ever so slight belling on the case mouth to accomadate the flat base bullets. It seems as though this caliber requires a fast burning powder. I've tried win 748, h4198, h4895, n540 and aa1680 which gave favorable results and finally this sunday at a gun show I picked up some imr4227 which actually is proably the powder I'll run with. It meters very well out of the Dillon 650 and is a fast burning powder. It's given me 3/4" to 1 1/4" groups at 100 yards so far, which is a better grouping then the wolf and all the other ammo availiable. I just wish I could bulk buy the Sierra 125 Spitzer's in .308 and also the Lapuia 125"s in .308 Fmj!

My bottle of AA1680 says it was "designed specifically for the 7.62x39." That would indicate the general burn rate for the little Commie round. 4227 and LilGun are right near there. 2400 is on the faster end and RL-7 on the slower end.

Suitable bullets would be the 100 Hornady or Speer Plinker, one of the 110-gr bullets for the 30 Carbine, the Speer 110 Varminter HP, the bulk Rem 125 JSP and (if it will fit and feed) the Nosler 125 Ballistic Tip.
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

I got good results with AA2230 and Nosler 125 Ballistic Tip in a customer's Rossi single shot. I saw no big difference in accuracy between .311 and .308 in this rifle. If you're crimping, that would be a problem with the Nosler.
