rem 6-1/2 small rifle primers

I was in a Sportsman's Warehouse the other day and they had a sign where the Rem. small rifle 6-1/2 primers would have been, if they had any. The sign read "do not use Rem. small rifle 6-1/2 primers for .223, only for smaller cartridges (listed a Hornet and Fireball I think). Anyone heard anything like that? I've got about 5000 of 'em that I bought to load .223.

Rem 7 1/2s are thicker than the 6 1/2s. If you load the 223Rem hot you run a chance of them rupturing. Call Rem and talk to them about it. See what they say.

What is Remington's thought process on producing all these primers that can't be used in the same round as everyone else's primers? I ran into the same problem with their small pistol primers. They had a very small warning on the box stating not to use them for 357 or .40 S&W loads. Doesn't seem like a very good business decision on their part.

I used them in a hundred or so 223 rounds when I couldn't get 7 1/2's. Load is 28 grains of W748 under a 40 grain V MAX. No primer problems, but not quite as accurate as the same load using 7 1/2's.

Hello BUBBA Jr and others it only takes one ruptured primer from one reloader with who knows what kind of load to have the Lawyers at any Firm running scared. The 40 in pistols and 223 in rifles BOTH are amoung the highest pressure rounds going . The 6&1/2 and standard pistol primers have a thin cup on purpose because some reloaders complained that they were having misfires in say a 22 Hornet with weak firing pin springs that are in some hornets which are redesigned 22 Rimfire actions and some revolvers that have weak firing pin hits on the primers. I suggest you go with what the book and primer makers suggest.

edit Bubba I agree with you 100 % it would be nice to know BEFORE you buy . however most reloading manuals are written by bullet or powder makers and not the few folks that make primers . some manuals say a load is with CCI or Winchester or even Remington primers but others state just small standard or Magnum primers . This is a bag of worms especially now when Primers as well as most other supplies are hard to find. . Because I bought a BUNCH of supplies years ago from a store that was being forced to close I will never have to buy bullets powder or primers of ANY kind for the rest of my life but I do understand your dissatisfaction with the state of obtaining the correct supplies .

I agree with you 100%. The problem arises when you can only purchase what the store has in stock, and you have to figure out what components are incompatible after you get home. If there was a place where you could find all the problems with component incompatibilities in one spot, it would greatly simplify the reloading process for those of us without years of experience by knowing beforehand what to avoid. If anyone knows of such a treasure chest of info, please let the secret out.[:)]
