malbillymalbilly Member Posts: 21 ✭✭
Can anyone help me ID a military(?) bullet? It is a FMJ SPBT with the following specs;

Length: 1.2635"
Base Diameter: .296"
Max. diameter: .315
Base to cannelure: .330"
Weight: 146 grs. (approx.)

Thanks.

    Sounds like a 30cal ball bullet.

    DCS
    The .315 max diameter is the kicker for a 30cal
    The only ones I can possibly think of would be 303Brit, 7.63x54R, one of the Jap 7.7mm, or a 7.65Argentine. The early 7.9 Mauser would be close with it's .318 spec, but IIRC they used a FBRN FMJ bullet (pre-spitzer days)

    Thanks guys. The person I got it from thought it might be Russian but wasn't sure. I was planning on using them when I reload .303 Brits.

    That sure sounds like the same bullet I pulled from some 1953 Yugo 7.62X54R to see what it was loaded with. Diameters can be a bit fuzzy to get an accurate reading on some of this ball stuff.

    While this is true in a "straight" conversion, the 7.92 Mauser uses a .323 bullet, as does the 8mm Rem Mag, the 325 whatever, 8mm-06 etc. Other "8mm" rounds use bullets as large as .329. So you can't always go by the standard "conversation" table when discussing bullet diameters.

    Lets not forget that the early "J" bullet used in the 8mm Mauser was .318 The "S" bullet is .323
