30-30 Flex tip

laylandadlaylandad Member Posts: 961 ✭✭
Would it be safe to use other powders than those listed on Hornady's website for loading 30-30 with the Flex tip bullet? I would like to use what powder that I have, rather than try and find/be put on backorder. I would like to use either W760, Varget, H4350, or IMR4350. Any help will be appreciated.

Reloading is already a bit away from the mollycoddled Safety that most folks desire. Moving from the bullet manufacturer's suggested loadings is just another little step away from the "Safe Zone" - How adventurous are you, and how careful/methodical/scientific are you? I would have no problem with that move, but cannot speak for you.

I would find a bullet weight from another manufacturer that matches the weight of the flex-tip Hornady, and look at the powders suggested in their manual. I would then start at 10% low of "Maximum", if that was still considered safe, and work up from there in 1-2% increments, until I found the first indications of excessive pressure, then back off two increments for the new load.

Thanks for the tip. I think I will try the 760 and Varget first, as they are mentioned in many manuals.

Not that I've ever used it, but the Hodgdon data manual just lists 30-30 data by bullet wt with no brands or type.

W760 and W748 are the only Win powders listed in the 26th addition, also has data for the H4350 and IMR4350.

Point being, that particular data manual don't care what style/brand of bullet your using, only wt.
