ruger 44 carbine. gunsmith for 1 in 18" twist brl

I am looking for a gunsmith to build a barrel for my ruger 44 carbine with a 1 in 18" twist. The problem i have foud with the accuracy on these rifles is with the barrel having a 1 in 38" twist. The 77/44 claims to be accurate and has a 1 in 20" twist. I live in the houson area and have spent my hours searching for a gunsmith but knowone either works on this model rifle or will not touch it because of the gas bolck. Has anyone had this done. I have read quite a few posts and find it frustrating when people answer one but don't know for shure. Looking for some 44 carbine fanatics. thanks eric

    Eric, I too own one of these fine guns. I appreciate the short, lightness and handiness of these older carbines. Accuracy with factory ammo is not that great, but I get excellent groups with my with reloads. I am using the factory sights and groups would probably tighten further with a scope. I worked up my loads at 50 yards. I have yet to experiment any further than 50 yards. I have no idea what the twist is in mine which was made in 1976.

    I've read on falfiles.com about a guy that blew his barrel - his smith replaced it by using a 444 marlin barrel and cutting it back on the chamber end, and rechambering/reaming

    "Randy Ketchum cut off some the the chamber of a 444 Marlin new old stock barrel, and put that on. Now My 44 carbine is heavier, but more accurate."
