once fired brass

alan selfalan self Member Posts: 328 ✭✭✭
I am new to reloading..so new i have not reloaded a single bullet yet! My question is about once fired brass. I have read the abc's of reloading as suggested by this forum and i am currently reading lymans 49th. Lymans 49th states to never use once fired brass from an unknown source(page 47)? I would like some opinions on this as it seems only once fired brass is available at the present time? Thanks for your time.

Was looking to buy some 357 1X brass to reload. What I found was that used brass cost almost as much as new. I'm I missing something here. I may have figured something wrong but with this pistol ammo I don't see a big cost savings over store bought stuff. I know I can shoot holes in paper with 38's sight in & practice. I would like to use the 357 to practice also.

I recently aquired some once fired brass in 257 wtrby mag and full lenghth resized but it will not chamber in my rifle.I did not trim brass so maybe this is the problem. However it chambers fine in a different rifle I own so it has puzzled me.Both are vanguards, one being a back country and the other a standard vanguard. The back country will not chamber the full lenghth resized brass.Any suggestions?

Keep looking in the auctions. Sooner or later good prices will be there for what you need. I sold a lot of brass at very reasonable prices last winter.

The problem is that most places are on back order for new brass.
357 mag once fired seemed to always in demand. I guess most people don't let it go.

In about 1980 Skeeter Skelton wrote an article in Gun Digest. He had good luck using 38 special brass and seating the bullet more shallow, giving the case more volume. He didn't load top end 357 loads in this fashion, but was able to increase the velocity of the 38 considerably. I followed his suggestions and was pleased with the results. Needless to say, use this load in 357 guns only[;)]. My load for this combination is 7 grains of unique behind a cast 150 gr. RCBS bullet crimped in the grease groove, NOT THE CRIMPING GROOVE! oal is 1.6" Eddie

Alan, I found the article by Skeeter, just had to think a moment. It is in the eigth edition of Handloaders Digest. Inscription says Wifey gave it to me for Christmas, 1980[:D]. Skeeters load was 13 1/2 grains of 2400 using the 38 Special case behind a Lyman 358156 cast bullet crimped in the 2nd crimping groove. He was getting right at 1200 fps in a 6" Security Six [^] Eddie

There has been a run on Bullets powder primers and cases in the last 18 months . 3 years ago I sold 15 thousand 38 cases for$.02.5 each. and 5000 357 cases for $.03 each I don't know if you will see them this cheap again but hold out for another 6 months and I bet you will find cheap brass again.i

I think u need to skip auction sites, and just use classified sites on gun boards.
I just bought 400 45colt brass..once fired..for a third of what new costs.I"m sure .357 can be bought for much less than new also.
