Winchester Failsafe

Was there anything special about the hollow point or was it just a normal hollow point bullet?

    I think it is a solid copper or copper alloy similar to the Barnes X-bullet.

    The bullet itself is basically a Nosler Partition with out the lead in the front section!! There is a lead core in the rear with "Winchester's patented steel cup just in front of the rear lead core. Here is a link to view a cross section of the FailSafe bullet. Winchester and Nosler discontinued because of the cost of manufacturing!! Hope this helps.

    I was told that these are the same/simular to the Black Talon bullets. I have 50 of them that were custom loaded. 25 150g and 25 180g. I also have two boxes of the Fail Safe factory ammo and 2 boxes of the original Black Talon, all in 308. They all look the same externally. All of the Black Talon are 180g, but the two boxes of Fail Safe are 150g, so it seems they made both weights. I have fired about 7 of the factory Fail Safe rounds. In a frenzy one day, I shot 3 wild hogs in less than 15 seconds with my AR-10 and ACOG combo. The first shot was around 120 yards. This hog never moved. I shot the second one coming in around 80 yards twice. He fell real fast. I shot the third running away at around 175 yards. He fell real fast as well. All 3 were not breathing when I got to them. I am really sold on this round.

    I've seen some info that indicated slightly lower max charges with this bullet than some other regular softpoints. This is about the same as the info for the Barnes original hp bullets.

    Seems I remember reading some articles about them expanding on impact and loosing too much energy too quickly and others saying the didn't expand and just went right through an animal. I hunted with them for several years and never had a problem, took a couple elk and several muleys with them including 2 shots that were about 350 yrds with a 30-06. Both the elk and the muley dropped in their tracks at those distances. I have been looking for some bullets to use for reloading but no luck.
