Correct Primer for 270 WSM

CgullCgull Member Posts: 13 ✭✭
I was sold a box of Rem 9 1/2 large and was told that it would work in my 270 WSM. I'm just starting to reload and it seems that my round requires WLMR or 9 1/2 M. the 9 1/2 large look smaller than the 9 1/2 M. Was bass pro correct in selling me the large or were they just pushing primers?

Large rifle and large rifle mag are the same size. The difference is the priming compound. All my manuals list loads using large rifle primers except my Speer and they suggest using large rifle mag.

It just takes a large rifle primer.

Depends, of course, on what powder you are using.

The combination of W760 and WLR primers has worked well for me in my 25 WSSM.

Your 9 1/2 primers should work fine. As has been said, large rifle and large rifle magnum primers are the same size. I have experimented with standard and magnum primers in the .270 Winchester and can't see any difference, either in group size or velocity. I make it a policy to use magnum primers in cases larger than the .30/06, but that's just me. Why don't you get a box of magnum primers and load a half box of cartridges with each primer and see if you find any difference in performance?

I use Large Rifle Magnums in mine as that is what my manual calls for, I dodn't think it would be a problem at all, especially if using extruded, ie stick, powder. With spherical, ball, I would stay with magnum.

That is assuming you start low and work up your loads.
