Shotshell primers in a 50BMG?

lksmith03lksmith03 Member Posts: 1,742 ✭✭✭✭✭
Has anybody ever heard of it being used before?

With the relative rarity of 50BMG primers, not to mention cost, and the current administration (congress and SC included) being not so gun friendly.
I was wondering if that has ever been tried and how well it would work if it would work.

If it would work, I imagine that it would be fairly easy modify an existing case to accept them

I doubt they would take the pressure in the modified case [B)]

As dcs says, they'd blow out every shot. The result would be a badly burned breech - even if all the hot gas and debris didn't injure the shooter.
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

Finging 50 BMG primers doesnt seem to be so hard. I just looked at two places that had them in stock.

I agree the price is high for them but for the reloader it will only save you money in the long run.

I have hear of guys using them in obsolete cartridges and even some low pressure modern cartridges but shotgun pressures run in the 1100-15000 range. Im sure the 50 is probably 3-4 times that.

I would not do it. To much pressure. Shotgun 15,000 psi 50 BMG 50,000 psi. Don't do it.

I figured in a single shot it would work pressure wise since there is virtually no case movement during firing.
Semi Auto, I could easily see the problem.
But I'm just a poor boy who can't afford one of those nice semi's in a 50bmg
